Could someone explain to me, like I am 8, why we need data centers, centralized processing, and AI ? Why? Who decided?

I phone the pizza place down the street. I get routed to India, where they ask me what I want on my pizza. I tell them, and they say you can pick it up in 30 minutes. I say fine and ask who am I speaking to with that accent. They say they are Indian, and I say that can’t be possible because people on the Indian reserve don’t speak like that. They say India like New Delhi, India. Oh, and then I say I can’t get to India in 30 minutes to pick up my pizza. We both laugh and the world is fine.

Infrastructure. AI centers need water for cooling and electricity for operating. They stay far away from loberal dumps that rely on “green” (solar or wind) power.

A quote from someone named Bill? ;-)
Don't ask him about vaccines but you can ask him about "climate change".
That's changed. ;-)

We managed fine without cars, refrigerators, computers and websites like Free Republic, too.

The computers and memory used for AI must be physically close to the operations due to connectivity and data transfer requirements
Many of the emerging AI applications are real time, competitive and adversarial so they need to located in secure locations with integrated operations
In the competitive AI space, things happen so fast that delay from transmitting data hundreds of miles is the difference between winning and losing

To ask PDJT is probably to be told that “winning” the AI development race against China is as important as or more important than winning the race to the moon against the USSR in the 1960s.

You cannot make one concrete example of AI usefulness.I can - it beats the crap out of a Google® search!

One of the first things I asked AI to do was to write some code for a C-64.
It gave me what I wanted in about 5 seconds.
