‘I’m on Fire’: Testosterone Is Giving Women Back Their Sex Drive — and Then Some
The New York Times ^ | Oct. 22, 2025Updated 4:46 p.m. ET | Susan Dominus

There is no F.D.A.-approved testosterone product for women. Insurance won’t cover it. Many doctors won’t prescribe it. It’s become a cultural phenomenon.

Spend enough time speaking to women who are taking testosterone — specifically, in very high doses — and you start to notice that they sound messianic. They’re often talking fast and intensely; they’re amped up; they’re describing what they clearly consider a miracle drug; and they have no intention of lowering their dose, despite the unknown risks or some problems with facial hair. After all, how can they worry about facial hair when they feel so alive? It’s nothing they can’t take care of with a quick waxing, which they now have the energy to do at the end of the day — right after they prepare a high-protein dinner for their family and before they put the finishing touches on their spreadsheets, close their laptops and light a few mood candles for the sex that they know will be great, maybe even better than the sex they had last night, even though they’re a day older.

“It’s changed my marriage,” Jessica Medina, a 41-year-old marketing consultant in Orange County, Calif., told me. With four kids in the house, and sex happening six times a week (up from “How about never?” pre-testosterone), she had to put a lock on the bedroom door. She and her husband had attended a “marriage growth” group at church for years, but it took testosterone for their relationship to be, as she put it, “100 times closer.” She was a little less emotional, a little less sentimental than she used to be, but she didn’t have time for that kind of thing, anyway. “It’s more like: Get stuff done, handle business, work out,” she said. “In order to do all that and still have...”

So, the problem in the marriage was the woman’s lack of desire.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that can cause elevated testosterone levels in women.
PCOS is characterized by an imbalance in the hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The ovaries produce excessive amounts of androgens, including testosterone, which can lead to symptoms such as: Irregular periods, Acne, Hair growth on the face and body, Thinning hair, and Insulin resistance.

Let’s just say it can create a very masculine woman.

Years ago I read about a sexual behavior research study called something like The Sociology of Sexuality. It was a nonintervention study, nor was it trying to solve a particular problem (I.e HPV among college aged women, ED among military vets with PTSD, etc.). Therefore, the study population wasn’t a narrow focus of America, but represented all adults in America, and all sexual behavior. And it had high power (large sample size, lots of data).

The results? 1) The researchers determined that seniors got it on more often than the research team expected. LOL And

2) The people group who had sex the most frequently were the people who had all three of these characteristics: marital status was married, stated religion was Christian, and they reported attending religious services regularly. LOL

The people who reported being happiest with their sex lives were the people who, wait for it, were the married church going Christians. LOL

And the women who reported most frequently experiencing orgasm were the women who — I think I see a pattern here — were married church attending Christians. LOL

I don’t remember the researchers stating this but I will. Sex is not just physical, it’s also mental and spiritual. Another thing: think about who talks about sex the most. We hear it from the the worldly people all the time. From now on when you hear others talk about sex, ask yourself: would you rather do things like the people who are loudest about sex but don’t get their love boat out of dry dock as often? Or would you rather do things God’s way like the people who don’t talk about sex as much but actually get it on the most and enjoy it the most?

Irreversible thickening of larynx leading to deepening voice, male pattern hair growth(more, thicker hair), , irreversible enlarged clitoris, hair loss, negative psychiatric symptoms ( anxiety, mood swings, etc), lipid profile changes, liver damage, possible (not proven) endometrial, breast cancer

Basically “Tide pods” for adults.

It could save a lot of marriages. Women who have regular orgasms are a lot easier to live with.

Thank you for your honest commentary here. My wife had a hysterectomy a few years ago, and as she’s perimenopausal, her mood was regularly very random, her energy was low, and her drive was almost zero.

Her GYN put her on estrogen which helped a little, but then she asked about testosterone. They started her on a very low dose, and she got incredibly moody, almost angry. She stopped for a while.

Then another GYN talked to her about it, ran some blood tests, and they determined that her testosterone levels were not balanced with the estrogen. They reduced the estrogen and upped the testosterone. The result? She’s energetic, happy, and her drive is back.

Anyone damning this practice needs to read up on how testosterone works for a woman. Testosterone is not a male-only hormone. Women have it too. As they get into peri- and post-menopause, testosterone levels plummet. This isn’t normal, and esp. for women who’ve had hysterectomies, they need help. Working with a GYN who regularly monitors the levels and adjusts a couple of times a year can be a God send for some women (and their husbands).

Women need T as well as men. Just not as high a level. Healthy males need around 1,000 “units” while women need around 200 or so. I don’t know the word for the units.

My wife and I did blood panels a few years back and mine were as low as a woman’s, and my wife’s were equally too low, though I forget her number. We’ve been on T replacement therapy for all these years.

It does indeed ramp up her sex. Keeps me going as well. I’m here to validate this article.

T is way more than just sex, though. It affects a lot of things. Lower T is often marked by greying hair, the new need for reading glasses, etc. And of course lower sex drive.
