Is it better to shower in the morning or at night?
BBC ^ | Sept 21, 2025 | Jasmin Fox-Skelly

Some people prefer to shower in the morning, others in the evening. Who is doing it the right way?

In this increasingly polarised world we live in, there is one question that perhaps divides us more than any other – do you shower first thing in the morning, or last thing at night? Or perhaps you are one of the 34% of the American population who do not shower daily.

Whichever camp you belong to, you may wonder what impact your choice has on your health.

Coming from the BBC, this surprised me. I though the Brits didn't shower.

Depends in what you do and how you sleep.

For me, it depends. If I’ve done a lot of grimy work, I shower right afterwards or before bed. If I’ve worked indoors without a lot of sweating, such as in the winter, I’ll shower in the morning.

Never shower right after eating. It can play havoc with digestion.

It might be a Blue Collar vs White Collar point of view.

Blue Collar, shower after a sweaty dirty day at work.

White Collar, shower in the morning as you’ll be near people all day.

I’ve known people who do both.

I had a barber who said he took several showers a day. I never asked him what he was doing to warrant this. I know he loved his wife :)

"It's probably more important to be cleaning your bedsheets than it is to be showering in the evening," says Holly Wilkinson, senior lecturer in wound healing and the microbiome at the University of Hull in the UK. "Because if you're going to bed showered but leaving those bed sheets for a month, then that is going to accumulate bacteria, dirt and dust mites."

A MONTH?!

Showering daily removes the bodies largest organ ( the skin) from doing its job. Removing skin oils removes your “ protective “ coating. Man survived thousands of years just fine with sponge baths. Much written about showering daily in chlorinated water, chlorine is a known cancer causing chemical.

I take several. usually in the morning then against night if I have been working outdoors. No rules, just don’t like to go to bed nasty.

Yes, I’ve been concerned about showering in Chlorinated water for several years now. There’s evidence that your body absorbs this chlorine through the skin. I don’t know the solution, other than a reverse osmosis water system, and those are expensive and wasteful.

The only stupid question is the one that’s not asked.

Except for the interview question: “Do you press charges?”

I’ve been both and that’s what I did. Retired now, so I always shower before bed - then get dirty the next day all over again doin’ stuff on the farm. Gardening, mowing, landscaping, animal husbandry - which ALWAYS involves manure in SOME form - mule, steer, chickens, cats, kennel dogs, etc.

Who wants to get into a nice cozy bed when they’re dirty from the day? Ick!
