Who Was Colonel Harland Sanders?

At the age of 40, Harland Sanders was running a popular Kentucky service station that also served food—so popular, in fact, that the governor of Kentucky designated him a Kentucky colonel. Eventually, Sanders focused on franchising his fried chicken business around the country, collecting a payment for each chicken sold. The company went on to become the world's largest fast-food chicken chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken. Sanders died in Louisville, Kentucky, on December 16, 1980.

He was born 135 years ago tomorrow. Remember the chicken in the bucket. Haven't been to a KFC in years, but I hear in Japan, Kentucky Fried Chicken is a Christmas day dinner tradition.

The Chinese love KFC. There were KFCs all over the place in Zhangjiagang and Shanghai when I was there in 2001 and they were always busy.

Wanna bring the Chinese to their knees? Shut down all of those KFCs.

(I didn’t rhyme that on purpose, but it came together quite nicely.)

Haven’t had a bite of KFC since the early 1990s... And that may be why I’m still alive.

Yes the Japanese reserve their Christmas KFC well in advance.

I didn’t get to taste it in Japan, but in America it is pretty bad compared to what I enjoyed as a kid.

It was so incredibly good in the 60’s and maybe 70’s, I can still see, smell and taste it from memory. The gravy was also incredible, and dipping that massive delicious breaded chicken leg in the gravy was an emotional experience.

Plenty of women, too.

And every other connected person, maybe.

Yup! At its peak in its early years nothing beat Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken. In fact, you can actually see where we got our KFC in a scene in “Goldfinger.” It was located at 701 NW 119th street in Miami although in the movie it was supposed to be in Kentucky. That chicken was absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!

I treat myself and the missus to a bucket of KFC, sides of mashed potatoes, and biscuits once a month or do.

Wash it down with some Guiness and Johnny Walker Red.

KFC in Asia is a lot better than in the US. I have no idea why that is.

My husband loved KFC when he was growing up, but he thinks it’s not what it used to be now,

I don’t have any experience with it; I’m a Popeye’s fan...

You can see the KFC at the 14 second mark in this scene from GOLDFINGER. If you look closely you can see coconut palms in the background as well as a Royal Castle burger store, both of which were in Miami, NOT Kentucky as that scene was meant to be located.

I will have to try it. But I really like the spicy Popeye’s, and their mashed potatoes and coleslaw.

They used to have a fish and shrimp platter that was good; but they don’t seem to have that anymore.

Omnipresent amid all the frenzy of Shanghai is that famous portrait, that modern icon. The faintly smiling, bland, yet somehow threatening visage appears in brilliant red hues on placards and posters, and is painted huge on the sides of buildings. Some call him a genius. Others blame him for the deaths of millions. There are those who say his military reputation is inflated, yet he conquered the mainland in short order. Yes, it’s Colonel Sanders.
