I do occasionally eat zucchini but have been very unsuccessful in growing it in the last decade or so! (Perhaps God's angels have been watching over me? :)

All I have left are Kale, a few lingering Cherry-type tomatoes and some Jalapenos that have gone to red.
This is no longer a Rescue Mission; it is a RECOVERY Mission.

The big potluck at church is over ... I have been looking forward to it for 2 months. The music was great - ‘praise’ group with guitars, mandolins, singing. A lot of women were cooking yesterday .... the food, the desserts...Wow!! People were by passing the small holds-one-piece-of pie/cake dessert plates & loading up the multi-compartment big dinner plates with several desserts LOL
As a child, the one thing I remember about that church is the food at the potlucks :-) About the only thing that has changed is that the ladies who made terrific fried chicken have passed on & no one has filled their shoes.
Today started rather ‘drippy’ & with dense fog warnings; however, it is now sunny, 84, & on the humid side. Tomorrow will be in the 70’s & a better day to work outside. We have company Wednesday, Friday & Saturday so it will be a very busy week.
Well I have really been blessed with all these pawpaws.187 so far!!! And still maybe a dozen or more higher up yet to be picked. From 4 trees! I can’t call it a miracle but it IS a blessing.
That is some harvest! One for the record books?
I had a nice surprise today, too! Our ‘Soldaki’ tomato gave me six really nice fruits that I wasn’t expecting, plus I picked a full TRUG of ‘Valentine’ cherry tomatoes.
I haven’t watered and it hasn’t rained...for weeks now. More proof that tomatoes are just, ‘Weeds With Pedigrees,’ LOL!
Day three. A little tangy and quite salty. I rinsed the cabbage really well but may have soaked it too long in the water/salt mixture, 4-ish hours. The cocktail sauce I used for getting some horseradish content has 1480 mg of sodium per 1/4 c serving and the fish sauce has 890 mg per 1 tbsp serving. I used 1 tbsp each. I’ll skip the cocktail sauce next time and just use red radish in place of the Korean/Daikon radish, which the horseradish was recommended at a replacement for. I’ll also look at fish sauce labels for sodium content.
Definitely has some heat to it and when/if it gets tangier, that will help overcome or replace the saltiness. Since I’ve only been using it for bun sized brats/sausage along with brown mustard, the mustard will help tone down the salt too.
I’m not getting any orange/red color like what I see on the web. As per maangchi.com, “For dishes like kimchi, I use the milder flakes so that I can add a lot for color without making the dish too spicy.”
So it’s the Korean red pepper aka Gochugaru that gives it that color. She has links to it on amazon, of course. I can live without the color, or I can grow some Gochugaru.
According to a moherearthnews article, finding true Gochugaru seeds is dicey. They recommended a seller on etsy but I also found that adaptive seeds sells them. Trueleafmarket has some hybrid so I’m not sure about that one. Etsy seller has 10 seed packet and adaptive has 30 for about the same price. Ten plants is plenty to save my own seed so it would be a one time purchase.

Meanwhile, the next batch may be made with a combo of shishito and habanero peppers that I grew this year. Since shishito has 1 hot pepper per 10 or so, I might have to mince one at a time and try a chunk of each pepper and pull aside any that are hot.
Yes it is a record, last year was our best yest ever with 27 total. Nice on the sabelka tomatoes.
Also going to look into the dry brine, salted cabbage, as opposed to the salt/water method. Recipe blog pic of woman looked like she was Oriental but there’s so many recipe blogs that it’s likely some are made with/by AI these days. Will have to hit youtube.

Super cool! I’m glad you and your mama had such a nice time at the much-anticipated potluck! I love events like that!
This afternoon I was determined to get 3 of the turtlehead plants in the ground. The entire meditation garden is full of fallen hickory nuts, which makes it hard for many things to grow in, so my plan has been to dig deep with my rotoshovel, loosen up all those nuts that have gotten into the soil, remove them and replace with the river soil with a handful of compost/manure mixed in.
It went well for the first plant. The second one had a few hitches, and the third took the longest. I had to remove and then transplant some plants that were inhabiting the spaces I wanted the new plants to go into. This garden is far from a clean slate, and I’m trying to do one section as I go. It needs a total makeover, and that’s what I aim to give it.
Hubby looks at me like I’m crazy sometimes, and maybe I am. He would do this so differently, I’m sure, but the fact is, he really isn’t much interested in the gardening aspect of this. He would hire it out, and even our young landscapers wouldn’t be as thorough as I am. I want those hickory nuts outta there! Now that the tree that dropped them is no longer there, I feel like I have a chance to get ahead of them.
Anyway, I worked outside for most of the hot afternoon. High was 87. I was dripping, even in the shade.
When I came inside to start dinner, hubby said to me, “You worked your butt off today!” Looking at my behind I quipped, “Yeah, I know I did, but it’s still there!!” We both chuckled and he made me a nice cocktail, my version of a rum punch. I’m feeling relaxed finally.
The meditation garden is coming along, bit by bit. Sometime this week is the building of the water feature. I’m not sure when exactly, but looking forward to it. Then I’ll need to get in another dozen or so plants after it’s in place. I’m looking forward to finishing this project.
