A study found that a diet rich in turmeric, garlic, green tea, and similar foods reduced biological age by an average of two years, with some losing up to nine.
The eight-week plan included exercise, sleep, and meditation, and excluded alcohol, grains, legumes, and dairy to support gut health and methylation.
Researchers believe the diet works by enhancing DNA methylation, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, and possibly preserving telomeres.
New research suggests that certain foods not only have the power to help you live healthier years, but they could also help turn back your body's internal clock.
In April, researchers from the University of Washington and the National University of Natural Medicine published the results of a small clinical study on the methylation diet in men. And if you're unfamiliar with methylation, UCLA Health explains it's a "metabolic process in which the transfer of carbon molecules influences DNA." It adds, "This, in turn, affects the activity and behavior of genes. As a result, methylation affects aging. And because methylation is tied to certain nutrients, diet plays an important role."
The researchers of this new study found that a particular set of foods, including turmeric, rosemary, garlic, berries, green tea, and oolong tea, are strongly associated with a reduction in epigenetic age, a biological marker that indicates how rapidly the body is aging at a cellular level.
To reach this conclusion, the team studied 38 healthy men aged 50 to 72 in Portland, Oregon. Half of them followed an eight-week lifestyle program that included a whole-food diet rich in methyl adaptogen foods, along with daily meditation, consistent sleep, and moderate exercise. The diet was not vegan or vegetarian, but it was heavily plant-forward, with "lean meats" included on the menu. It excluded alcohol, dairy, grains, and legumes, which the researchers believed could interfere with short-term gut health and, by extension, methylation pathways.
At the end of the trial, the team discovered that those in the intervention group had shaved off an average of two years from their epigenetic age, with some participants experiencing reductions as large as nine years. However, there is some variation in the results, with one person's biological age increasing.
So, how do these foods work this kind of magic? Researchers believe these age-fighting foods work in several key ways. First, many contain natural compounds that appear to regulate enzymes responsible for turning genes on and off, such as EGCG in green tea and curcumin in turmeric.
Need Another Reason to Love Ginger? A New Study Shows It Can Provide a Major Health Benefit Lab studies, such as this 2010 study, also demonstrate that they can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, two key factors in aging and disease. There’s also growing evidence that these ingredients may help preserve telomeres — the protective caps on your chromosomes that shorten as you age.
It’s important to note that this recent research was based on a small study that included only middle-aged, mostly white men. There are other studies that have focused on women, including one that followed six women between the ages of 45 and 65 for eight weeks who adhered to a similar regimen. Their results, UCLA Health explained, also showed reductions in biological age, ranging from 1.2 to 11 years. Although it was a small study, the findings do make your next cup of green tea look all the more appealing.
There are different kinds to try. Try jasmine green tea, white tea, yuzu tea, others.
Don’t Americans generally mean commercial curry powder made by McCormick or Schilling found at the grocery store - he means that is 50% turmeric.
Another one mentioned on Epoch Times was Matcha. Guess I’ll have to try them all.
TMG (trimethylglycine or betaine)
Matcha is a powder, you whisk it into the water. It’s very popular now, so it’s become more expensive. The ceremonial grade was already a little expensive, even back in the 90’s.
Those two are poor examples. Go to any ethnic Indian grocery store to find a number of choices. Sun Brand Madras curry powder is excellent. There are many others.
Good for you! :) That’s a lovely encouraging post.
Some of the things I take every day.
Just get capsules.
I think you just told your dirty secret.
Yes, I do like jasmine green tea. Good stuff.

Side effects may include diarrhea, stomach upset, bloating, and gas. It may also cause allergic reactions in some people.
No, I’ll pass.
Thanks, it was meant to be encouraging.
My wife is convinced and thinks it’s what cured her sciatica nerve pain.
I’m very much a skeptic and rarely believe what I’m told about health.
But I do appreciate the health news ConservativeMind posts.
I’m the worst candidate for feeling as good as I do.
I do everything wrong.
When the doctor said he had never seen me before, I reminded him I saw him 17 years ago.
I told him I eat what I want, whenever I want, and as much as I want.
He said, “How are you still alive?”.
I sit on my 40 foot long front porch every night smoking and drinking vodka.
I’m the oldest in my neighborhood and I know everybody.
They are all so frail.
I wonder why they don’t just try turmeric.
We have neighborhood parties almost weekly and they tell me I have to quit drinking and smoking.
But I’m the guy they call if they need help or there is a stranger in our neighborhood that has to be told to leave.
Tomorrow I will put the horse manure on the curb at 6. Then I have to pull weeds for 4 hours and won’t have any pain afterwards. Then I will mow a 60 foot x 60 foot lawn. Then I will dig up a tree stump, water the yard, feed and muck the horses, feed the dogs, and at 8:30 will put the chickens away. Then comes the vodka and smoking on my 40 foot porch built in 1917 in the San Fernando Valley.
I take a capsule of Turmeric Curcumin every morning and have for years.
No one in our family has ever had cancer, and I’m not worried about it.
No grains, no legumes, no dairy, no alcohol. No thanks.
I was thinking I’d need about 7 gallons a day if I ever want to be 18 again.
The West is obssesed with finding the right spice, juice or regimen that will make you lose your belly fat and live to 120! Enough already, common sense in eating and exercise will help you feel better, even if you die at 65...
