Jaguar’s European sales collapsed by 97.5% in April 2025, registering just 49 vehicles, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (AECA). That’s a steep drop from 1,961 units sold in the same month last year. Year-to-date sales from January to April were down 75.1%, totaling only 2,665 units. Globally, Jaguar sold just 26,862 vehicles in FY24/25 — an 85% drop compared to 2018.

I miss my old air-cooled VWs. I’d love to have one or two now, but I can’t afford them these days.

I have a 2017 XKE with 349 super-charged BHP. From the era when they used British actors who played baddies in movies advertise them (”It’s good to be bad!”).

THAT was a fantastic ad campaign!

I love my XKE. Very reliable and, yes, I’ve turned plenty of bolts on her. She can pick ‘em up and put ‘em down in very short order. Yup, she’s one fast kitty!

English motorcycles were not exactly reliable. I had a Norton P11 many years ago and I'm lucky to be alive! The damn thing sounded great, accelerated like a bat out of hell, but was designed by the Brit TLAR ("That Looks About Right") method and during steep turns would immediately swap ends and you'd be suddenly and involuntarily facing traffic!

Another time I had just had it tuned at a dealer and while I was on the freeway and a car driver came up alongside me and yelled that I was leaking something. That something was gas and it was pouring on my hot engine and forming a white plume behind me - thank God it didn't ignite!

Damn thing was beautiful but evil.

My oldest brother had a 1969 Norton Commando for a while. Never had serious problems with it, but he sold it when he needed the money. For some reason, he refused to sell it to 19-year-old me, something about not wanting to have to explain my death to our parents.

My P11 had another Quirk or two:

It was kickstart only motorcycle and in about one out of three or four kicks, it would backfire and throw me over the handlebars!

Its electrical system (Lucas, naturally) never worked well and despite many visits to the shop, never successfully charged the battery. My workaround (since it was my only transportation at the time) was to power my lights with D-cell batteries and I'd gamble that I'd make it all the way home from my swing shift.

All of the screws and bolts were Whitworth dimensioned - not inch or metric - so I had to maintain a separate tool set to accommodate my Norton. The vibration - which was so severe that seeing anything in my mirrors was impossible - also made the expensive and rare Whitworth bolts fall out on the road and with it the timing case cover.

Needless to say, I stuck to Japanese bikes and one Ducati after that experience.

Years ago I saw an XJ-6 with a vanity license plate that read “WANKER”.

When you market your car to roughly 3% of the population you will only sell a few cars.

Then I bought a Lotus Elan, even more fun to drive.

My friend had one of them. It must have been put together by monkeys, but when it ran, it was amazing. I tried driving it once but I could only do it if I took my shoes off, the pedals were too small and too close together for my duck-feet.

Sounds like fun! I don’t recall if my brother’s Commando had Whitworth bolts. Probably not, since I don’t remember him mentioning it, and he would have, colorfully and at length.

I loved the style and sound of a Brit bike and have had many brands over the years Including a Commando 750 , Bonneville T 120R 650, BSA Firebird Scrambler 650 both of which I still have and a BSA Royal Star 500 and Royal Enfield 350 that I sold recently. Loved all of them but the Royal Star was my favorite, rock solid ,great on the back roads not so much on a highway and get home before dark when you need the Lucas system to light your way!I have a horror story about that.

When I was with the Marines in Vietnam, I carried a wallet with me with photos of a BSA Lightning, a ‘65 Cobra, and several pictures of glamorous young ladies.

The idea was that if I was killed, the VC or NVA who killed me would think that he had killed the biggest stud in the 1sr Marine Division.

It sure seemed funny at the time.

“Animals”? Considered by many (myself included) to be among the greatest rock albums ever made.

Hey, I don’t care who buys them now, but I’d LOVE an E-type. Unreliable, hard to fix, but one of the best looking machines evah!

Correct on all points
