FR new software

Posted on 06/30/2025 5:37:20 PM PDT by airplaneguy

Does anyone know how old the Free Republic software is? Doesn't appear to have been updated in at least the 20 years that I've been here. It would be nice to have hyperlinks and better interfaces and a better search function. Not just text and photo files in line. It looks like Craigslist looked about 25 years ago. Anybody with software experience have any thoughts on this?

FR is great the way it is and does not need blotted add-ons. If that happen it will be like the state of California all messed up.

Kind of an outdated way of thinking. I have an old CRT television that technically isn’t broken. Still works but it’s low definition and doesn’t have the HDMI Inputs or high definition 4K or high dynamic range or any of that other stuff. Yeah it works but is it really a quality product?

Most of what we talk about here is replies and responses to other people’s comments. What about having an italicized or box that shows what the previous comment was without having to scroll back and see what the other person wrote? Something like that or have the ability to add a hyperlinks to go right to the comment you are responding to. Maybe something like hyperlinks to companies websites when talking about whatever this company did or that company did with reference to new products and services offered by Coca-Cola or whatever.

> Want to easily upload pics and documents.

FR does not have a repository you can upload files (pics, docs) into. The storage required to support that feature would increase the site costs tremendously. Posting pics and docs on FR only requires that the files be stored somewhere else on the internet that allows "hot-linking", that is, a URL/link on a site like FR that points to the site with the file. Most sites are okay with that (e.g. Wikipedia), some are not.

Yeah, you have to know a trivial (but important) bit of HTML coding. FR has a number of "How To" pages devoted to that topic. Could it be made easier? Sure, there's a GreaseMonkey add-on that makes some things easier. It's mentioned a number of times in older threads, might still be available.

Or submit an RFP to JohnRob. He's not going to do it for free, mind you. :-)

Maybe you could organize a special donation activity to raise money to tempt JohnRob into doing it. I'm just speculating, of course, but I'll ping him on this post just in case he wants to comment.

Agreed, simple is better. No change needed.

We don’t want to go the way of Microsoft. With each upgraded or “better” version, it becomes worse — more cumbersome, slower, intrusive.

> It is less fun since they coded it to force closed any html commands that posters forgot to close.

True, but the change did make it easier to read the subsequent comments. :-)

“editing previous posts.”

That definitely would be handy.

Why would you need 4K to post and comment on articles?

Sounds like you want to change FR's mission.

Perhaps X/Twitter or Truth Social or TikTok or Reddit or Discord or Tumblr would be more to your liking. There are plenty of others sites to choose from that will live up to your exacting standards.

Software “improvement “ usually means unnecessary “features “ just so a software writer can get cred from other software writers.

Go design an improved shovel or something...
