Heatwave here starts at Noon today through 7pm on Monday! How's it by you?

First chores of the day are weeding the garden in the 'relative' cool of 77 degrees, getting dogs in and out before Noon and the mowing done by then, too. It is VERY windy, so that's going to help cool me down, but also blow a lot of grass and dirt into my FACE while I mow. You can't win! Indoor chores are mostly food prep and cleaning the house for 'family events' Sunday and Monday. Summer is in Full Swing, already! Second cutting of Alfalfa happened yesterday - with this wind and heat, they may be able to bale it quicker - at least before Tuesday when rain is predicted again.

Beau and five of the dogs are headed to a Water Race, today. It will be hot, but the dogs will be in the water and/or shade.

Have A Good Weekend, Everyone!

It was supposed to rain, yesterday. It’s supposed to rain, today. Midweek, they told us to expect 1-11/2 inches of rain, on the weekend. I’m skeptical. I think the ocean is messing with the forecasters.

I got out early to the store. No garden work today. We are starting 4 days of over 90 degrees here in west Michigan. I’ll water every night. Bought two red pepper plants because the Costa Rican red pepper seed I had did not come up. The tomato plants are loving it. Have a great weekend everyone.

Boston/RI area - extreme heat warning 11 AM Sunday TO 8 PM EDT Tuesday. We’re already making plans how to survive since we know our A/C isn’t the greatest.

Once it hits, we’ll be shutting down most of the library computers and switching to the little computer in the dining room. Husband is planning to do needed computer maintenance and call this Opportunity.

I’ve got the outdoor animal food stocked and need to find something heavy enough to put water in that won’t be continuously knocked over by the outdoor animals. The bigger ones tend to like to climb into the water dish and that does it for all the others.

We still need to restock our own fresh food - fruit, veggies, etc. - before it gets too hot to go outside.

Absolutely awestruck by your farming plans. You guys need to be appreciated as much as we always remember our military. Keep hydrated!

Heat Index of 100. Smell of fresh cut grass all the way home from work just now. Hope they’re all drinking plenty of water while getting this first cutting of hay.

Just checked my recently seeded beds and they’re staying moist but I guess I have the same problem as Augie — old seeds. Only thing that popped up in two days is one sugar baby watermelon.

Between seed age, storage conditions and only planting four of each, chances for failure were pretty high. Beans can take a week so some of them might still pop up. Cucumbers like a small range of temp and not too hot to germinate.

Things that would likely help.

buy less seeds
store them better
mulch seeded beds and the drip lines on them
mulch drip mainline
win the lottery

Fresh tank of cool spring water, white RV hose sitting down in the tall grass running from tank to pump, black pump and black drip line sitting in the sun. I can only imagine the temperature variation. Starting temp 130, ending temp 65? Ouch

Might have to stick a temp sensor in the bed near a dripper and log the temperature from 10 minutes before the 1pm drip session to 10 minutes after. See if there’s a spike and then a dip.

Interesting day at work. It was just me and weekend boss but he left within an hour. I guess his wife is very sick and he had red eyes from lack of sleep. He left me to run two and possibly three machines.

Then at 8:15, the power blinked out. That wreaks havoc on everything and usually the big boss and the guru get everything checked out and back up and running. Seen it once. I got through it and was back up and running as fast as any other dept with more experienced people so I did ok.

The heat index hit 103 here today. It’s forecast to hit 107 tomorrow, with lots less wind. A siesta with plenty of my lemonade / Gatorade mix, on Sunday afternoon sounds like a good idea. Early service on Sunday sounds good too, but will be crowded.

Hoo-Wee and welcome to summer! Sunshine and low 90°s here in Misery over the weekend. I got a lot done in the garden patch and suffered mightily for it.

I got the cages up around all 16 tomato plants. The best of them would be shoulder high if I’d gotten it done before the monsoon started. I spent a couple hours pruning and doing a half-assed job of weaving/tying the plants up, then fertilized the plants and watered. I’ll need to spend some more time on that, but at least they’re off the ground where they can get some air now.

The cukes and squash are finally starting to take off. Sweet corn has been planted. Pepper and eggplant rows weeded and fertilized. Got a little bit of the new asparagus planting weeded.

Main goals for the week are to put mulch down around the tomato plants, and spread compost on the walking paths between rows. I’m headed out Thursday for three nights of High Limit sprint cars at Lucas Oil Speedway so I’ll have to hustle to get those things accomplished before I take off.
