The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
We had a high of 59 yesterday with rain...same forecast today...after that...SUMMER! Stay cool
We have been buying Japanese sweet potaties for awhile...but they seem to be getting scarce. I now only find them at a local health foods store. Would also like to grow some.
My son was having a hard time in school and when he was playing soccer as the goalie, a storm had passed by and beyond him was a perfect rainbow, with him under it in the exact center.
Of all the time to not have my camera.
My snow peas are just coming in, just a few days before we leave on vacation.
SO my plan is to harvest every last one, no matter what the size and get the flowers too.
It should trigger another flush of blooming for when we get home about 1 1/2 weeks later.
In the meantime, I need to put up something to shade the tomatoes, lettuce, and snow peas from these next few days of brutal heat with full sun.
In this kind of heat, we close all the indoor shades, curtains, and blinds.
Since our house sees full sun almost all day, that makes a big difference in how hot the house gets.
We do have AC but at those temperatures, it’s hard pressed to keep up.
Just curious: when you say ‘outside animals’ that lay down in a water pan, what are you raising?
I used to give my Lab her own Kiddie Pool in the summer months. She loved it.
Thanks for the compliment. I’m a Vet and a Gardener, so I’m covered, LOL!
I’ve got fans going as well as the A/C. Right now it’s 88 degrees and the wind is really brisk - but it feels more like a Santa Anna wind, so not much relief. I got all my outside chores, mowing and making sure everyone had water with 10 minutes to spare! On to indoor tasks for the rest of the day. :)
Awww, that’s sooo cool!! Well, the rainbow part.
I have never grown Sweet Potatoes - as with other root crops they’re ridiculously cheap to buy in Wisconsin.
For your next growing season, I’d look to purchase them as soon as regular potatoes or Sweet Potatoes are for sale in the very early Spring in your growing zone.
Looking on-line they look pretty expensive for slips! What do you give for the potatoes themself at the store? If they are organic and/or have not been sprayed with a sprouting inhibitor (they should be able to tell you) you could probably start slips yourself. ;)
I did find you some recipes though, so this thread isn’t entirely useless, LOL!

From the days when you could see the paths.
That’s what I think, too.
Has anyone noticed that homeless people don’t die from germs? They die from drug and alcohol abuse most of the time. Sometimes at the end of a gun if they try to commit crimes to support their habits. But they don’t die from all the germs they’re around.
You have experience with shishito peppers right? The Bonnie plants I found at Walmart have flowers all over now, but once those stop will the peppers grow in their place? Been a long time since I’ve done any vegetable gardening.
Outdoor animals = raccoon families, 1 possum, the occasional groundhog, skunks, including some glorious white ones, a fox family with 2 kits, chipmunks, squirrels, and a massive variety of feathered friends.

I go thru 1 20lb bag of shelled peanuts a week out the library window.
Labs are the greatest! And vets are the best! We’re all eternally grateful to you.
I’ve tried dish pans of water but they just end up upside down. To refill, I’d have to try a kiddy pool in the front of the house instead of the back. Possible. Good idea.
That’s still a great view.
I also notices that all the welfare families who let their kids run wide all day, and are dirty as all get out, are otherwise pretty healthy considering their neglect.
Has been a summer weather pattern here in St, Tammany Parish . 70’s at night mid to high 90’s during the day.
Yes; statistically, they avoided covid better than most demographic groups. Sad example of God's amazing organic world that is full of self-correcting or healing solutions.
I love it when experienced gardeners disclose their tips for making things work naturally, like planting marigolds in borders to repel deer from more vulnerable plants behind them.
Yes you will have peppers after the flowers. Plant in full sum and water well. Mine are flowering now.
Thank you! Yes, full sun. With the rain that we get every day or so, I’ve only watered once or twice. That will likely change with these temps for the next several days.
