The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
They will grow lots of fine roots, so well drained soil and fertilize. We use compost.
Two of these are in my regular soil with some amendments, and two are in large planters with organic potting mix. I try a variety of things when I’m new to it, to see if anything works. I have fertilized twice, about 10 days apart. There’s been plenty of rain, but with a little time to dry somewhat in between.
Thanks for your tips!

Dang!
Got stink bugs in the garden again.
I found some on my garlic and some kind of caterpillar.
NEVER seen vermin on the garlic.
This is a bad year for both allergies and vermin and disease.
I draped some floating row covers over my snow peas and tomatoes for the next three days worth of heat. Then it’s back to 60’s.
I hate this kind of weather.
I knew what you meant.
I kind of saw it as from God showing me that he had GOD’S favor.
I don’t like reading too much into stuff but that was so outstanding that he was under the exact center of a high rainbow.
I planted my peppers in the asparagus bed as they're supposed to be good companion plants.
That 5 Color pepper is way outgrowing the others. It's doing great.

Heat Index of 100. Smell of fresh cut grass all the way home from work just now. Hope they’re all drinking plenty of water while getting this first cutting of hay.
Just checked my recently seeded beds and they’re staying moist but I guess I have the same problem as Augie — old seeds. Only thing that popped up in two days is one sugar baby watermelon.
Between seed age, storage conditions and only planting four of each, chances for failure were pretty high. Beans can take a week so some of them might still pop up. Cucumbers like a small range of temp and not too hot to germinate.
Things that would likely help.
buy less seeds
store them better
mulch seeded beds and the drip lines on them
mulch drip mainline
win the lottery
Fresh tank of cool spring water, white RV hose sitting down in the tall grass running from tank to pump, black pump and black drip line sitting in the sun. I can only imagine the temperature variation. Starting temp 130, ending temp 65? Ouch
Might have to stick a temp sensor in the bed near a dripper and log the temperature from 10 minutes before the 1pm drip session to 10 minutes after. See if there’s a spike and then a dip.
Interesting day at work. It was just me and weekend boss but he left within an hour. I guess his wife is very sick and he had red eyes from lack of sleep. He left me to run two and possibly three machines.
Then at 8:15, the power blinked out. That wreaks havoc on everything and usually the big boss and the guru get everything checked out and back up and running. Seen it once. I got through it and was back up and running as fast as any other dept with more experienced people so I did ok.
Yep and they’re indeterminate so you should keep getting more flowers/peppers for a while.
That’s so beautiful!! I love it!!
Since our solstice was the last day before the really unpleasant high temp and high humidity (heat index 107 or more) “mugly” weather arrived today), and, the timing worked out, wifey, daughter-san, and I did our belated “Father’s Day” yesterday and headed up to a nicer lake (than Dolan Lake) up in S. Illinois: Pounds Hollow. The water was not as clear as usual due to the recent storms, but, it was still at least as good as, say, KY Lake or Lake Barkley most of the time: Ie., swimmable. And, there was no storm debris in the water.
To my delight, the Forest Service has, after many years of neglect, cleared a little bit more of the slab-rock trail the Civilian Conservation Corps built MANY years ago, north of the beach, so there is more bank access. It appears they even zapped some (but not all) of the poison ivy. So, after a good swim @ the beach that REALLY did a number on some thigh muscles I’ve not used extensively that way, for a while, wifey and I did some fishing. It started slow, but after 6 pm the bluegill and catfish were biting nicely. The Channel Catfish were hitting our little garden worms on light rigs for bluegill - there’s little like having a 4 lb. channel catfish smack your worm on a bluegill rig not even a second after it hit the water. People who think Channel Cats are just bottom feeders, don’t know the fish well! They are often voracious feeders throughout the water column.)
Twice good size fish ran me into snags. Another time the fish was simply faster than I was, taking the bobber down to a snag B4 I even got my reel engaged after the cast, and hanging me up. 2 times I was able to break the (light wire) hook free by pulling hard enough to bend it. The other time, I snapped the line and, the bobber being a no longer made, and rarely seen larger size “Rocket Bobber” (IMO one of the best fishing products ever made)... I decided to wade out to it to retrieve it. The bottom in the spot we were fishing has lots of roughly 10” - 14” diameter (probably old rip-rap) rocks, so, that was a bit dicey. But, I was able to not turn an ankle, and did safely retrieve the entire terminal tackle rig.
400(?) ft. across from us, a couple guys were decidedly “less safe” in behavior. They were using a mildly impressive rope swing hung from a large tree, and users have to hang on past the shallow water @ the bank B4 dropping maybe 10 ft. into the water. These guys were far too drunk... This resulted in a conversation drifting over to us that went like (minus the every 3rd word being profanity):
“I’m perfectly aware that I am taking my life in my hands, and I am responsible for what I am doing.”
“Yahooo!!!”
**Big splash**
“Hey! HEY!! Do you need help??!!”
**Smaller splashes**
“No, man, I’m ok. But I think my hangover has started early.”
Sheesh!
We ended up bringing home 9 nice bluegill and the 4 largest catfish - roughly 12 lbs of catfish in all, maybe a touch more. I made up simple cornmeal based breading and wifey fried up some of the catfish for supper. Oh, was that good. No fishy or muddy taste at all. :-)
The heat index hit 103 here today. It’s forecast to hit 107 tomorrow, with lots less wind. A siesta with plenty of my lemonade / Gatorade mix, on Sunday afternoon sounds like a good idea. Early service on Sunday sounds good too, but will be crowded.
However, it's occurred to me that with the other measures I've taken to extend pump life, it might make sense to filter water going IN to the jet pump itself, so buildup of "caked" sediment inside the pump itself doesn't kill the well pump. Disadvantages are that doing so would considerably accelerate the filter cleaning schedule, and, I'd have to considerably revise the piping from the pump to the well, and the pump to the tank, etc., as the pump and possibly the tank would have to move to make things fit. Ugh. On a good note, I scored one of those small -inflatable- wheel, fairly heavy duty, garden carts, in good condition, at a yard sale, for $5. That is going to be very handy! Same seller had several light weight, light color "summer" shirts for $1 ea., in my size. Yay! I can toss a few of my old shirts that are falling apart into the rags tote, and a few of my worn but not falling apart shirts can become yard / garden work shirts.
Great fishing! As a kid we’d catch Yellow Perch by the bucket-full. Hard to come by, now,. I blame myself, LOL!
Any type of pan fish are my faves. I’m hungry now, just thinking of your fish fry! :)
Oh, that pepper is just lovely!
‘win the lottery’ Yep. ;)
Great ‘save’ at work! That’s going in your Permanent File, I’ll bet.

I have a heck of a time getting beans to sprout.
Beans like warm soil, 60 degrees and higher for germination. If you’re planting too early in the Spring, that is 99% of the problem. The other 1% of the problem is chipmunks or squirrels stealing your bean seeds. ;)
You can also pre-sprout beans in wet paper towels inside of a zip-lock, or invest (under $10) in a soil thermometer. But, the great thing about beans is that you can continue to re-seed all through the growing season. :)
I am growing two poles of ‘Saychelles’ (green, pole) this season, but will do a planting of ‘Good Mother Stollard’ drying beans when my cucumbers are done. Cukes are just starting to climb and bloom for me.
How long do you pre-soak them?
I’ve seen seed packages that say *DO NOT PRESOAK*.
I do it with my snow peas since I get that crop in so early. It really makes a big difference with them.
Figure out how many beans you will need for your rows and pre-soak them. Cover completely in water for 1/2 a daym drain them and put the wet beans in an open ziplock bag with some paper towels to keep them damp. Should ready to plant 1 or 2 days later. I try to wait until I see a few roots poking out of one side of the bean which gives you confirmation that your seed is viable.
Sprinkle your damp sprouting bean seeds with innoculant (it looks like dirt) If its showing I try to plant the bean with the root side pointing downward. . If you have more of the screened soil use that to cover your beans. Water with a gently spray. You could put some old boards put them over the row to conserve moisture for just a couple of days, but remove them after that or you start to collect pill bugs that will eat your young plants. Keep them watered and they should start popping up. Good luck!
