Scientists May Have Found a Natural Alternative to Ozempic
Sciencealert ^ | 02 May 2025 | CARLY CASSELLA

Scientists may have identified a way to naturally regulate blood sugar levels and sugar cravings in a similar fashion to drugs like Ozempic.

In mice and humans, the key to unlocking this natural process was found to be a gut microbe and its metabolites – the compounds it produces during digestion.

By increasing the abundance of this one gut microbe in diabetic mice, researchers led by a team at Jiangnan University in China showed they can "orchestrate the secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1".

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone that is naturally produced by the body and which helps regulate blood sugar levels and feelings of fullness. GLP-1's release is stimulated by certain foods and gut microbes, and its mechanism of action is mimicked by drugs like semaglutide (the ingredient behind Ozempic).

I didn’t eat a lot of it, but it was something for a carb. We also do only brown rice.

Switched over from white rice years ago and while it took a little getting used to, now wouldn’t go back.

They reference B. vulgatus in the gut biome. The article only mentions B. vulgatus. You’d need to look that up separately to find what you need to eat.

To improve its presence in your gut: sauerkraut, not “cayenne pepper” as some joker interjected earlier.

You are correct about the rhubarb leaves. Almost too bitter to be worked with. I’m finding out more as I look into it.
My recipe may work best just taking rhubarb and artichoke out, but I was trying to come up with a recipe that would use them. A challenge for the pondering.

Yes…doctors are idiots. I don’t even know why you would go to one. I guess it’s amazing how well the human body is designed that we can live as long as we have—considering we go to doctors and eat like crap.

It’s funny. My wife and I go to weight watchers. It’s AA for fat people. Every week I go to meetings and listen to fat women explain away why they did not lose weight that week. So many excuses.

People eat like crap. They don’t exercise. They eat the wrong things. The drink the wrong things. And they do nothing to understand how their body works.

Even people on GLP1 drugs don’t understand how they work and what needs to be done to maintain weight loss. They continue to eat crap, and wonder why they put ten pounds on the week after they stop their shots.

But yeah…lets listen to “Marge from DeMoines” because she “knows” why I am fat without ever seeing me.

Thanks for pointing out the missing image. I previewed it be for posting and it worked. I just looked and it is not displaying for me, either, 7 hours later. It also isn’t showing on my first post.

I put the image on catbox.moe. It’s a free service, but it isn’t 100% reliable.

Yes, that's what I said. One will lose waistline fat, but build muscle tissue which weighs more than fat. Thus one's "shape" will improve but it's possible for the weight to remain the same.

However in exceptional cases of obesity, it would be reasonable to expect a change at the scales as one's waistline decreases.

Each case is different.

Sure.

Because doctors know everything and never make mistakes, misdiagnose, misinterpret, or not follow the party line as dictated to them by the hospital administration or the AMA and FDA.

Nor do they ever just shuffle as many people though appointments are possible nor prescribe based on pressure or big pharma kickbacks.

my thyroid does not grant me permission to lose weight.
~~~~~
The thyroid glands’ main function is to produce T4. T4 converts to T3 as it enters cells. In cells T3 sets up with ATP in an oxidation/reduction hierarchy. In oxidation, T3 converts to T2 as ATP converts to ADP. T2 converts to T1 as ADP converts to AMP. T1 converts to iodine as AMP converts to uric acid. Then cells eject both iodine and uric acid for tagging and excretion.
So in oxidation mode T3 and T4 get used up and depleted. Then your thyroid must create more T4. However, we were not meant to stay in oxidation mode. When cells turn to reduction all of the stages of hormone and adenosine depletion get reversed, and you create T3 without any need for thyroid T4 production.
Oh, and of course, people who are not *medical professionals* are idiots and can’t figure out how to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet without some white coat holding their hand and orchestrating their lives.
Remind me how much emphasis the medical schools on diet and nutrition for health.
We would need to know the type and intensity of exercise as well as diet. As long as you have the basics of a food plan down not being sedentary is absolutely essential for mitochondrial efficiency and energy metabolism.
Gaining muscle but the weight’s not losing.
The trick of losing weight isn’t so much of what you eat it’s how much you eat I lost 60 lbs and keep it off I of only eat twice a day and never 4 hours before bed time and lots of water.
Retuning the taste buds isn’t easy but it can be done determination is the goal.
I hear these stories and wonder what kinds of relationships you have with your doctors. I have been going to my PCP’s office for a couple of decades. I’ve never felt rushed and I’ve never felt like my questions were not answered.
I’ve been in surgeons offices and oncologists and they have always taken the time to explain stuff and treat me with kindness.
I also understand that it’s a professional relationship, not a friendship. I don’t waste their time either. I follow their instructions and research their diagnoses. I am, what is called in their world, an engaged and compliant patient.
I pay for good insurance. I planned for that and I hope to keep it as long as possible.
There are many people who do not have PCPs. They go to “factory” facilities where they are shocked to learn they are treated like a product. They go to the VA because it’s free and they are surprised they get healthcare that is not “high quality” in terms of “feel good” or “caring” treatment. (I fully support the VA for service related issues. I think for non service related incidents its a place where the government can phase out treatment.)
Medical relationships are as different as there are people.
But the dismissive nature I read on this site about medical advice and treatment befuddles me. It’s a team sport—you need to work with your care team, understand what they are doing, ask questions, and follow up and follow through.
No doctors are not perfect. I worked with plenty of them during my time being employed at a hospital. They are usually smart about a specific set of things. When you need those “things” I trust them the same way I trust my car mechanic. But, like car issues, it is important to change your oil and check the tire pressure between visits.
We are talking past each other here…
I think people are absolutely responsible for what they put in their mouths and how often they move their bodies.
I don’t need a doctor to tell me that stuff. But I do need a doctor to look at blood work, MRIs, etc. and take the necessary steps to treat an illness or disease.
People have said that breads they enjoy in Europe don’t seem to affect them the way American ones do. Our American wheat is very ‘fooled-around-with’.
Have you ever tried baking with Einkorn, Emmer or Spelt flour?
In the keto and carnivore communities, it isn’t believed that fiber is as essential for many as we’ve been taught to think.
I personally don’t believe that man, at any point in his development, ever ate *only* animal protein, but was probably often omnivorous. But many people on animal products only claim that they see no ill effects.
There’s a book out called The Wheat Belly and it addresses the issue that wheat has been changed from what it once was and now has a different effect on the body.
Plus, it may depend on additives we put in our breads that aren’t used or allowed in Europe.
