The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

I feel your pain, brother.
I'm a few weeks shy of 62. Now I can accomplish in a day what would have taken three or four hours ten years ago.
I don't much like it.
How did you fare with yesterday's storms? We were lucky here. Lots of rain but no wind to speak of. Other places around the area were not so lucky. The City of Columbia landfill/recycling yard (10 miles north of my place) was hit by a small twister which wiped out their sorting facility for the recycle stuff.
What is the second photo? The link in the next post isn’t loading well for me.
I am a firm believer that gardening and being outdoors in general helps with depression. In the winter, although it gets very cold sometimes, we bundle up and walk for a few miles nearly every day. There were days this year, when being outside for 30 minutes was enough. For me, though, it’s absolutely necessary. I am a sun lover (and a Son lover) and in winter time, there’s not a lot of it here in the Midwest. Although I enjoy a good snow, it’s the lack of sunshine that always gets me “blue”. I take extra vitamin D3 and that helps some, too, but I think getting outside is very helpful.
Garlic question. I have a store bought head of garlic, and two cloves are starting to sprout. Can I plant them in soil, and might they grow into anything?
The rhubarb plants I bought and repotted a couple weeks ago have been moved outdoors and are looking pretty good. Tomato plants are still in the greenhouse and are also looking happy. I didn't get the last ten asparagus crowns planted before the rain started. I'm wondering if I should stick them in the fridge until it dries up enough that I can set them out?
I managed to get the house yard and all of the outlying stuff mowed in between rain showers Friday and Saturday. It was starting to get shaggy and would have been a real mess if left until later.
So far my orchard trees have been relatively unscathed by frost. Mrs. Augie's magnolia tree got semi-frozen one night but not bad enough to wipe it out. The blossoms that were open didn't do so well but most of them still in tight buds and weren't damaged.
Honeycrisp apple.
Red Flowering Crabapple.
Hubby uses peanut butter too, works fast.
Very pretty!

Bit of rain, bit of wind. Not much.
First day on the job today. Kind of thought I was just going in for new hire paperwork and I did not wear the right shoes for standing all day so my back was killing me the last few hours. It’s possible “I slept wrong” too. Something that never used to be a thing.
Nope, today was first day of full time. I think it will work out. Once I get trained on the machines, I’ll be left alone to run a machine. Possibly more than one since once you’ve done your setup and hit start, it might be cutting for an hour. CNC machining.
Fiddlehead Ferns before they unfurl. :)
The timing is a little off, so you can plant it in a pot, keep it near a window and clip off the greens as they grow and use them as you would Chives.
The soil is way too cold for planting garlic, but if you can keep it going until things warm up, you could plant it in the ground outside in mid-May. (You’re a zone warmer than me)
Un-pot, separate the cloves a week or so before you plant to let them dry a bit before planting. Garlic likes full sun, good mulch, plenty of water and does not tolerate weeds.
Or, you can see how long you can keep it going inside and just use the greens until it gives out. If the bulb is still firm and juice, but the greens have died back, wash it off and use it as you normally would. :)
Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing! I’m still weeks behind you up here on The Frozen Tundra - but there ARE signs that Spring has Sprung! :)
Many thanks! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
I should’ve realized they were some kind of fern!
Big day! Just finished the major construction on (2) 3x6’ raised beds. I still need to line them with weed barrier & put them together. When I do put them together, they need to be close to where they’ll be sited permanently because all 4 sides together are pretty heavy.
Also, I got a load of topsoil delivered today. Around here, they sell mulch & topsoil by the ‘scoop’. I got 4 scoops - the max the truck could carry, but I don’t know if I have enough to fill the beds. I am thinking about hauling a load of mulch myself (different source - bigger scoop!) & partially fill the beds with that - beds are 16” deep. The mulch will eventually decompose, but it will give me time to build the beds up with compost, etc.
The topsoil is on a tarp on our asphalt parking area, right next to mom’s 3 beds. Zero percent rain today & for the rest of the week in the forecast. Hmmm, what is that really dark cloud coming over the mountain? A 10 minute downpour is what it was. I got a smaller tarp over 2/3 of the pile so maybe it won’t be a mud puddle.
I bought an oregano today at Walmart (along with 3 ferns on sale for the front porch) so now, with a rosemary & lavender, I have 3 plants for the herb garden. My niece gave me 4 small dahlias she started from seed on Saturday, plus I have 2 tubers of Kelvin Floodlight. The pressure is on to have some place to plant them!
Thank you, mm!
Thank you, p!
Off to the left of the apple trees in the woods I think I see a Horse?
I hope your rhubarb takes this year! Rotted manure in a trench and form a mound over it so it sheds water? Good luck!
