President Donald Trump declared a national emergency on electricity in the United States and doubled the tariffs on aluminum and steel from Canada after retaliatory tariffs from America's neighbor to the north.
The president, in a lengthy post on his Truth Social account on Tuesday, also threatened to 'permanently shut down' the Canadian auto sector.
The only thing to make his tariffs stop is for Canada to become the 51st state, he noted as he ramps up his trade war.
In response, the stock market dropped over 500 points as nervous investors worry about a potential recession.
The increase in tariffs, from 25% to 50%, will go into affect on Wednesday, Trump said.
'Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on 'Electricity' coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,' Trump declared.
'I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area,' he added.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford put a 25% tariff on Canadian electricity to Michigan, New York and Minnesota on Monday in response to earlier tariffs from Trump.
Ford, a conservative politician who runs Canada's most populous province, says he's ready to 'shut the electricity off completely' if America continues to 'escalate.'
Trump's fury continued in a second post to his Truth Social account, where he warned Canada will pay a historically big 'financial price' for its electricity tariff. Many states in the Northeast buy supplemental energy from Canada.

Amen! I would shut off my AL power and send it to MI to shut off any dependency on Canada. It should be illegal to depend on them.
Agree, this should have little effect on our markets
And secures their border....
Our market was inflated under the Biden government spending spree, I'd expect a 10% correction.
Trump’s expanding of votes from lower middle class reduces focus of his support on the stock market.
Retirees depend on Social Security more than 401Ks. Soc Sec is over 1/2 the income of ALL households with someone 65+ in them.
Without Soc Sec, 40% of 65+ households would be below the national poverty line. With Soc Sec, it’s 10%.
What...wat....they making Molatoff Cocktails with maple syrup.
Nuclear, fossil, and hydro-, oh my! We should probably buy electricity from a more environmentally friendly source.
Call for you on Line 1...it’s the Founding Fathers.
All hail WEF Carneyval barker the godfather of his Sidekick Chrystia Freeland’s son!! RAT types are so incestual like.
Does everyone get it now? You get two, yes two nazi’s, all over again.
Those people up there will be begging Trump to save them. Which, I might add, many are already doing on X.
Canada is going to get their marxist tyranny good and hard.
Michigan is 0.5% of electricity from Canada, and the power sharing goes both ways across the border.
Will Canada invoke Article 5 when the U.S. invades?
The liberals are tanking too. What is America going to do without millionaires and billionaires to keep their government going? ROTFL! There won’t be a “rich” to “tax”. Embrace the suck, Snowflakes!!!
Tell that to the Canadians.
Since they have employed Tariffs in an obscene manner for a very long time and we are only employing ours now to get them to stop their UNFAIR and UNNECESSARY Tariffs, Canada goes first.
Canada needs to drop their Tariffs and secure their border FIRST and then we will.
Yea, I am so sure that is what President Trump is doing!
I don’t believe Trump has any desire to annex Canada. He is yanking their chain but the Canadians seem to believe him. The last thing we need in this country is millions more liberals who are still smarting from the Treaty of Paris and the Treaty of Ghent.
A market correction and recession has been forecast by Danielle DiMartino Booth and many others for quite awhile now. Lots of shenanigans to hide our economy’s troubles going on last year with false unemployment reports, extraordinary forbearance procedures hiding all the FHA loans that should have resulted in foreclosures, and on and on.
It was coming, tariffs or no tariffs. It does appear the tariffs and the federal budget battle have made investors extra skittish and this has precipitated this sharp decline in the markets, but reasons to be skittish were already there. But of course they’ll blame it all on Trump.
100% And guess who is to blame?
BTW. The reference Michigan. Thats lower Michigan. The UP of Michigan is OK as far as electricity goes.
But, if Wisconsin and the UP have to send power on the grid to support MN. Watch out.
Also, the Columbia river system. That treaty signed ages ago to fund Dams up in BC for flood control has to be renegotiated. We are still subsidizing Canadian electric through that treaty.
Thats why we dont hear a whole lot out of BC.
Ford is about as conservative as Schumer and Warren.
It bounced back.
Up here in Alberta, I am expecting a depression in Canaduh, the likes of which, will make 1929-1939, look like a picnic! Thanks True-dolt! Thanks Marx Carney! Thanks ‘Fatboy Thug’ Ford!
With any luck, I’ll be able to get down to Panama!
I still hope for ‘Operation Just Cause, Eh’! The US invaded Panama to get ride of a narco-state that was endangering the US. Canaduh is a narco-state that endangers the US.
Evidence of Canaduh being a narco-state?
