Veteran CBS News reporter Jan Crawford dinged news organizations for not thoroughly covering President Biden’s “obvious cognitive decline” this year until it became unavoidable during his disastrous debate against Donald Trump over the summer.
Crawford, the network’s chief legal correspondent, insisted stronger reporting on the topic could have changed the entire election as she responded to a question from “Face the Nation” moderator Major Garrett about the most underreported story in 2024.
“Undercovered and underreported, that would be, to me, Joe Biden’s obvious cognitive decline that became undeniable in the televised debate,” she said on the Sunday morning show.
She then noted recent reporting by the Wall Street Journal that detailed how White House aides covered up Biden’s mental decline over the past four years.
The explosive report says staffers formed a tight circle around the 82-year-old Democrat to limit his in-person interactions.
“And yet he insisted that he could still run for president. We should have much more forcefully questioned whether he was fit for office for another four years, which could have led to a primary for the Democrats,” Crawford said.
“It could have changed the scope of the entire election.”
Questions about Biden’s mental fitness grew while his first term dragged on as some news outlets, including The Post, reported on his steady stream of gaffes and on-camera struggles.
Following the octogenarian’s June 27 debate in which he struggled mightily, reporting on whether Biden could lead the nation ramped up. He was eventually replaced as the Democratic nominee by Vice President Kamala Harris in July.

Agreed, however what I find most annoying is that there is an attempt to make it seem as if the hiding of Biden's mental decline was solely the work of White house aides. There were signs of his decline during the 2020 presidential campaign and much of the brow beating and social ostracism was by the press itself against anyone who dared even imply that Biden was less than completely in charge. Note, I believe, some of the seeming improvement in US policy in the last 3 years was Biden being less in charge, and thus someone more competent (and more in tune with reality (a very low bar)) making policy.
As far as news, the biggest story is that all the major news outlets conspired with, aid and abetted the Democrats to keep from the public the obvious mental incompetence of Joseph Robinette Biden and all his crimes.
We all knew it. They all knew it. The main result was the almost complete disregard that we have now have for the media. Journalism - when one cannot pass studies classes.
You forgot ‘And the WSJ was part of the effort to cover up Biden’s dementia. ;)
In other words, the ONLY reason the bimbo thinks the press should have told the truth was because if Biden was dumped sooner they might have won? NOTE TO MSM: must not lie for democrats if it might help Republicans...Only lie if it hurts ONLY Republicans...

I had a fellow at work that voted Trump, then 4 years later, wanted to brag they had voted Biden. I had one comment - “I would suggest you stop listening to CNN, MSNBC et al.

I would NEVER be inclined to spit on another human being, especially a woman. But I would consider making an exception in this case which insults the intelligence of anyone with two eyes ans two ears.
Suggesting that all this was inadvertent oversight is a damnable lie.
It wasn’t ‘underreported’ it was intentionally ‘deeply hidden.’

I was trying to come up with Leftists who were ‘victims’ of this coverup - but they all knew, every one of them. They all played along thinking that it worked in 2020, why not do it again?
The most underreported 2024 story was how Biden got elected don’t want to leave any facts for the history books.

Actually, what is the most “underreported story” is the story of “journalists” not reporting the FJB dementia. They were, apparently, the only people on the planet who weren’t “aware” of his mental decline.
Guess that’s what happens when your side says “nothing to see here folks” and you say “oh, OK.”
