California Economy Feels the Pain of Hollywood Studio Troubles
The New York Times ^ | December 26, 2024 | Kurtis Lee

Film production has failed to bounce back after major strikes last year, and competition from other locales has gotten stiffer.

The struggles have become a painful, recurring story line in Hollywood.

A script supervisor visiting a food bank every other week. The cinematographer who moved to Georgia for better filming opportunities. An art department coordinator applying for administrative jobs to cover rent.

The economic outlook of the Los Angeles area, with a population larger than most states, has been clouded in recent years by events that have upended the entertainment industry. Market saturation led to a shakeout among direct-to-streaming providers. Then the Covid-19 pandemic shut down production. And strikes by writers and actors last year went on for months, giving studios time to explore filming elsewhere, in regions that offer hefty tax incentives.

When the strikes ended, workers in Hollywood hoped their schedules would finally fill up again. But for many people, things only got worse.

In the third quarter of 2024, film production levels declined 5 percent from the same stretch in 2023, based on a report from FilmLA, the official film office of the City and County of Los Angeles.

Paul Audley, the organization’s president, said in the report that even a few months ago many had thought they would see gains — hoping for a rebound from what he called “the strike effect.”

“Instead, we saw a pullback and loss of forward momentum, heading into the fall season that will make or break the year,” Mr. Audley said.

Since May 2023, when the Writers Guild of America strike began, motion picture and sound recording jobs in the Los Angeles area have declined 15 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For Deborah Huss Humphries, the past few months have been particularly challenging.

China pretty much owns Hollywood, so I consider this to be a good thing.

Lib-O-fornia has gone from the punchbowl to the turd in the punchbowl. Flush them and let’s start over.

I thought Hollywood was having great box-office success with present crop of movies like “wicked,” “Muana 2,” and “Gladiator 2??”

I don’t follow the industry, so it all seems contradictory.

Well, they all share the blame of pushing their social agenda onto every TV and movie for the last 10 years. Despite it costing them, they continued to do it, and now it has bitten them in the butt.

People are sick of girl boss and Mary Sue characters, DEI, mixed race couples in every thing, dumb white guys, and tranny & the gay agenda in every single TV show, movie, or commercial.

Hollywood only had about 10 real successes the whole year. Most of their movies lost movie, some of them for hundreds of millions of dollars.

A script supervisor, a cinematographer and an art department coordinator are jobs we can do without.

Hollywood, Games and Movie companies are ill prepared for the rise of hobbyist and small companies that will put out movies and games out of their garages.

Every single second, development gets better and faster. Entire ecosystems of products and Cinema will be produced at home.

The NeoLuddite blow back is just starting, the wave of AI/System production will wash away humans in many areas.

Keep in mind, that the vast majority of the movies, TV programs, and assorted short features are now a product not of Hollywood, California, but have fled to Canada, Georgia, and Many overseas locations. Hollywood’s best days are now in the rear view mirror.

Write a story worth watching and people will come and watch it.

But you have completely lost the ability to write a story, all you can do is preach and it is not even good preaching either.

It is boring when it is not insulting and stupid when it not boring and insulting.

There are many good authors out there. Pick a couple and have them come up with story ideas for you. It is not that hard.

Did a quick query and saw this...take with grain of salt.

IMO, I am thinking Hollywood is declining.

According to recent reports, US theater revenue in 2024 is projected to be lower than in 2023, with a significant drop in the summer box office, showing a decrease of around 10% compared to the previous year; meaning that theaters are expected to earn considerably less revenue in 2024 than they did in 2023.

More people probably watch video shorts, or Rumble or YouTube videos than TV’s or big screen movies.
When movie industry stake their claim on meaningful and not or woke or “marginalized” community topics, there could be a substantial comeback. Since so many movies are CGI enhanced, or even dominated there is no reason that any person with the skills and a few fast computers couldn’t make a big screen hit.
So tech advances fuel the demise of the old tech...like talkies ruined silent film studios, or TV ruined live concerts and radio.

When AI and CGI get perfected and you can’t tell the difference between a real actor and a digital one, the days of the high priced self entitled actor will go the way of the Dodo bird and silent movie stars.........and I for one hope I live to see it.

“completely lost the ability to write a story...”

While I enjoy some, I knew they were out of ideas when they started making a slew of of comic book movies.

To each their own. I'm not a number nor do I wish our economy to be controlled and run by fast computers dictating what is efficient and beautiful.

Humans working and making a living is a peaceful society. Having no purpose destroys.

We see that with the advent of men committing suicide and adrift. Innovation and technology is a equalizer, which has destroyed ‘manliness’ in many areas.
