I remember that short story. We read it in class in 1984
In engineering, one quickly learns that there’s a huge difference between mathematics and physics. Many concepts that are simple in mathematics are simply impossible in physics. some of these include i (the square root of -1), infinity, going from -infinity to +infinity in Zero time, a singularity, negative time, and many more. Included among these are dimensions greater than 3, excluding time as a dimension.
Me: Shades of “That Hideous Strength” only without the severed head.
You: Well, we have Biden and I’m not sure his head is wired to anything anymore.

That’s why physics has been becalmed for the last 50 years or since the 70’s.
Mathematicians create the tools that physicists use. However, for 50 years the mathematicians have gone to the multiverse beyond 4 dimensions.
None of it translates into the four dimensional world physicists must work with. You can’t even take a four dimensional problem, pass it off to the multiverse multidimension—have it do work there—and then pass it back to the four dimensions in which physcists work. There is no gate.
Worse the string theorists have turned the universities into safe places for string theorists. So no one with an alternative theory can break in and threaten the string theory gravy train.
Its my hope that when team trump comes down on the whole woke dei academic infrastructure—they’ll broaden the attack to include the string theorists.
That likely won’t happen. AI will more likely be what takes them down.
