Free or paid?
I use Avast free but a great thing today is that when you don’t have another antivirus running, Windows Defender always comes on automatically and it is pretty good by itself.
Malwarebytes free is also good for occasional scanning to get a second opinion from whatever antivirus you choose.

avast worked pretty well but now insists that we pay to renew it and it keeps shooting popup advertisements up on the screen claiming that our free renewal is available but when you click on the ad it connects you to an all-paid option page.
We have received over 300 of these popup ads and they are very very annoying. We finally Uninstalled Avast BUT.. and here’s the catch....all 3 uninstall programs will not actually remove the incessant false advertisements.
We checked the internet and this is a known scam by Avast. There are a couple of people who’ve posted ways and means that they claim will finally stop the ads. But these techniques are so very complicated, you have to be a computer genius to try them. And probably you need a full weekend of time to do it.
We are pis*ed off at Avast and have to recommend you consider twice before using it.
We switched over to AVG. So far it seems to be working okay. It does pop up ads telling you that you need their paid version but at least they let you click each ad off okay. Annoying since these ads are almost daily interruptions in our computer lives, but okay we get it. HOPEFULLY AVG won’t permanently infest our computer system with ads like Avast did.
Hopefully!

AVG, Ivacy VPN, with Brave is pretty good knocking down everything. Even Youtube ads.
For browsing I will use a Thor server and browser with the same.

Windows Defender. Comes with Windows, works well. There’s really no reason to double up. All it does is slow your computer down as now 2 things are scanning every file.

As of now, here is what I'm using:
- I'm still using the Kaspersky Password Manager until such time as it stops working.
- I completely removed Ultra AV. It don't trust it. I removes what it thinks are viruses without prompting me first, and it interfered with the execution of other programs.
- I'm now using Windows Security (Defender) for my virus protection. I'll see how it goes, but so far I have no complaints.
- I also use NordVPN for my VPN. I always run with the VPN on. I use NordVPN's malware features to manage website ad blocking, tracking, URL cleaning, malicious website alerts, and machine vulnerability.
