Faced with the imminent expiration of my Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac software, I am advised not to renew it, as Kaspersky is a Russian company. I have used it for years and years, and have always been very happy with it. Do any computer-savvy FReepers have any suggestions for a top notch replacement for it? Thanks.
We use Avira.
There is a free version and a paid one.
this site is good for researching this...... https://www.av-comparatives.org/ My preference is ESET.
I use ESET.
The last Mac I got I just formatted it and installed windows,
Windows comes with an antivirus thing
Then they should change their name to Kaperschmid.
Total AV
Avast matey. Arrrrhh.
I use Bitdefender....Works real well for my iMac Pro
The whole thing began when an NSA contractor improperly downloaded some documents onto a flash drive to take home. When he opened them up on his personal laptop, he was unaware that the NSA inserts code into their documents to trace the access, and Kaspersky identified that security code as malware (as it should).
One feature of Kaspersky Security is its heuristics engine. If turned on, it will send the malware it discovers back to its labs for deep-dive analysis, which is a competitive advantage feature that people want in anti-virus software. Inn this case, the Kaspersky labs were still in Russia when this incident happened.
The FBI claimed that the Kaspersky software was used by Russian hackers to gain access to the NSA documents, but later investigations revealed that the NSA contractor's home computer had already been infected with spyware prior to taking home the documents.
Embarrassed at the NSA contractor's improper access, they deflected the story onto Kaspersky, trying to make us believe that Kaspersky Security was actually Russia malware that recognized the document as NSA and sent it to Moscow.
In response, Kaspersky left Russia and moved their operations to an impartial country.
There is nothing wrong with the Kaspersky Internet suite.

Kubuntu
If you are happy with it, keep it. One advantage is that it is more likely not to be a cooperator with the NAS/CIA/FBI and more likely to recognize their intrusions as viruses.
I doubt anything you are doing is of much interest to Russian intelligence. If it is, then maybe switch?
Don’t buy any protections. I use Avast on both my Macs and my PCs. Works great, and is free.
I use Intego, very happy with it.
“The last Mac I got I just formatted it and installed windows,”
Why would you even do that? Sorry but it defies logic.
Who advised you? I just wonder. Anyway if you are halfway smart you don’t need antivirus software on a mac. I don’t have antivirus on any computer at my house. Computer nerd for 45 years and professional for 39. If you watch which links you click on you will never have a problem.
“Kubuntu”
Linux... The other antivirus.
35 years on macs - never bought a virus or anything product. No problems.
Waste of money for home use anyway.
