An international study has found a surprising connection between constipation and an increased risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE), including heart attacks, strokes and heart failure.
The study analyzed data from over 400,000 participants in the UK Biobank.
The research team analyzed data from 408,354 individuals, identifying 23,814 cases of constipation.
The findings showed that individuals suffering from constipation were more than twice as likely to suffer from a major cardiac event as those without constipation.
Moreover, the study highlighted a particularly concerning link between constipation and hypertension.
Hypertensive individuals who also suffered from constipation were found to have a 34% increased risk of subsequent cardiac events compared to those with hypertension alone.
"Our research suggests that constipation may exacerbate the cardiovascular risks associated with high blood pressure, further increasing the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes," Professor Marques said.
In addition to these epidemiological findings, the study also explored the genetic links between constipation and cardiovascular disease.
"Positive genetic correlations were identified between constipation and various forms of MACE, indicating that shared genetic factors may underlie both conditions. This discovery opens new avenues for research into the underlying mechanisms that connect gut health and heart health," Dr. Leticia Camargo Tavares, co-first author of the study, explained.
"The implications of this study are far-reaching," Professor Marques said.
"With constipation affecting an estimated 14% of the global population, particularly older adults and women, these findings suggest that a significant portion of the population may be at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease due to their bowel health," she said.
The study authors emphasized the need for further research to explore the causal relationship between constipation and MACE and to identify the specific biological pathways involved. One of these mechanisms may be via a "leaky gut."

Sooo...take away: Being full of shlt is bad for your heart...
Pro-biotic capsule every night helps me.
Beat me to it
Eat Cherries before bed, nightly. 6 to 12 will do.
It’s weird we don’t hear about more Democrats having heart attacks.
And didn’t James Gandolfini die that easy ... on the toilet?
You can find a study to prove anything, depending on who’s funding it.
“die that WAY”
Not easy.
No, in an Italian restaurant. In Italy.

Oh. I thought I recalled reading that he and his son had just returned to their hotel after having dinner at an Italian restaurant.
I looked it up AFTER I posted. You’re right.
Mea Culpa.

This fact has been known by workers in resthomes for a long time. And not just #2 but #1 or both at the same time. But the medical industry has always refused to believe the very eyewitnesses who watched it happen as it happened. “Can’t happen” and they try to blame other causes. It happened to my father but he recovered, and a good friend just lost his wife to the very same.
The stress of pushing too hard to relieve yourself can and will cause heart attacks and strokes. Anyone who has worked in a resthome has witnessed it. I have talked to only one doctor who confirmed this as real, and only because he personally watched it happen to one of his own elderly family members.
“I understand why. Constipation, people strain to push. Your blood pressure goes up the harder you strain. Stresses your system. You have any problem thats near a critical issue, could be enough to make it happen.”
Yep, absolutely. I have witnessed it.
My first thought, as well.
People who take drugs often suffer from constipation.
Eat fruits, whole grains and vegetables, people! Avoid drugs!
I eat virtually no fiber at all. No problems at all. Fat lubricating the tube is better for keeping things flowing than fiber.
Fiber works with lots of water, but many older people in particular are underhydrated and fiber without plenty of fluid aggravates constipation.
“Being full of shlt is bad for your heart...”
I wish! If it were, then liberals would die early.
