New evidence suggests a huge asteroid DID hit EARTH 12,800 years ago causing an ice age, wiping out dozens of species and decimating humans

A huge asteroid may have hit the Earth 12,800 years ago causing global climate change and extinction, according to new evidence found in South Africa.

Scientists analysed ancient soil at a site called Wonderkrater and found high levels of platinum - which they say supports the The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis that a disintegrating meteor hit Earth and caused a mini ice age.

The resulting ice age is believed by many scientists to have wiped out dozens of mammals species including the Mammoth and giant wildebeest and decimated the human population.

Scientists believe 'platinum spikes' found in ancient soil samples across the world are evidence of the meteor fragments that crashed into Earth.

Meteorites are rich in platinum and the Wonderkrater site in the Limpopo Province, north of Pretoria in South Africa adds to almost 30 other platinum spikes found worldwide, mostly in the northern hemisphere.

Until now, proof that meteoroids had impacted during that period and potentially led to a mini-ice age had only been documented across the northern hemisphere.

A total of 28 areas with high levels of platinum had been found.

The findings from the researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa partially support the theory that a meteorite crashed into earth with global consequences – along with another meteorite site discovered in Chile.

An episode of rapid cooling named the The Younger Dryas is a well documented period believed to have contributed to the extinction of many species of large animals around 12,800 years ago.

Theories previously pointed to this post-ice age cooling as a result of changes in oceanic circulation systems.

Another theory was presented by American scientists in 2007 – that the cooling was triggered by the dust fallout of an asteroid impact.

This conflicts a wee bit with the Laurentide ice sheet.

As to whether humans alone or climate change caused the megafauna extinction, I'm an "all of the above" guy:
  1. People were here feasting on large animals.
  2. A comet hit, causing massive climate disruption.
  3. Times were pretty desperate. People finished off the megafauna.
Humans can be amazing survivors.

I love how the Daily Mail has a couple artist renditions of how an asteroid could have smashed into Earth and a scary massive asteroid hurtling toward Earth.

if it hit in the ocean that might explain 40 days of rain and flooding that covered the mountains. *shrug*

12k years is virtually nothing in terms of time, the Earth could still be feeling long term effects from such a strike.

It hit an ice sheet. That is why there is no crater

People were here feasting on large animals.

Human predation of large herbivores is actually worse for the species than other predators.

Why? Because unlike obligate carnivores, human metabolism cannot convert protein to sugars without also digesting our own muscle tissue. And we need a lot of calories, especially in a cold climate, because our brains use 25% of average caloric intake and our body shape and size means large heat loss. Inuit living a traditional lifestyle need 9,000 - 12,000 calories a day.

As a consequence, humans hunt large animals in their prime to get the fat, which more adversely affects the breeding population. So human predation pressure is actually greater per human on large animals than other predators.

The Laurentide was present long before and after this event.

A rocky comet hitting ice sheets seems to fit the facts well.

In our orbit around the galactic center we cross dust lanes about every 12,000 years.

They’re not just dust, they’re dust, gravel, rocks, boulders, and the occasional mountain.

Mostly we miss the mountains, they are few and far between.

Hopefully we’ll miss the boulders the next time...

And the Sasquatch, with their warm fur, prospered through the ice age.

I was watching a show about exoplanets, with scientists discussing whether or not an alien species might be looking at Earth and wondering if it is habitable for them.

One scientist commented that it’s possible, but they might likely pass on Earth because, with large quantities of ice at both poles, we would rightly be considered in an ice age!

I was both shocked and pleased by his honesty!

Wait.

What?

12,800 years ago we were emerging from the last Ice Age. Was
there another Ice Age that they did not tell us about during the Holocene Climate Optimum?
