The GOP Is Pat Buchanan’s Party Now
The Nation ^ | 7/19/2024 | Lehmann

Posted on 07/20/2024 3:25:24 AM PDT by Phoenix8

…But as the 2024 Republican National Convention in the garrison state of downtown Milwaukee winds down, a more definitive transformation of the Trumpist creed is under way, chiefly in the selection of Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as Trump’s running mate.

Trump’s own listless, meandering, and astoundingly long acceptance speech on the convention’s last night only made it all the more clear that the MAGA torch is being passed to a more focused and clear-eyed generation of ideologues, with Vance as their de facto leader. But the party’s fulsome embrace of a blood-and-soil brand of economic nationalism, as epitomized by Vance’s speech before the convention on Wednesday, shows that it’s Pat Buchanan who is the ideological forefather of the 21st-century Republican Party.

Buchanan, of course, was the former Nixon speechwriter who harnessed the restive white-nationalist animal spirits of the conservative movement for his insurgent presidential campaigns in 1992 and ’96. Among other things, Buchanan’s presidential runs launched the culture wars, as both an expression and an organizing principle of conservative mass politics. His fiery denunciations of waves of corporate downsizing at the behest of the financial industry presaged the Trump GOP’s mythical, but tirelessly promoted, alignment with the interests of the white working class. Even his paleocon broadsides against the Israel lobby looked ahead to the open America First sympathies of the Trump movement leadership. For all the reservoirs of digital ink spilled on the hallowed self-made origins of Vance’s unique American success story, the Hillbilly Elegy author is plainly the spiritual offspring of the Buchanan movement.

The Nation is far left and I don’t agree with many of their claims here.

However they make an interesting point that Republicans are returning to the “Middle America” strategy offered by Pat Buchanan in 1992/1996 with the selection of Vance by Trump today.

We rejected Buchanan and his strategy in the 1992 primary and choose instead the path of neocons and deep state affiliated politics with Bush senior and his CIA past.

IMO we would have been better off today. The Bush(s) era got us wars, stellar short term stock profits but at the cost of selling off our industrial base to China. Meanwhile we’ve seen the ascendance of the Democratic Party far left in controlling societal norms (who would have fathomed trans women wearing devil horns reading LGBTQ-friendly books to 1st graders these days in 1992?), open borders and near total control of media and education.

Pat Buchanan is far too old now (85) but maybe Vance and Trump can help get us back to our real America roots?

we could get back to our real American roots but we will be fighting tooth and nail to wrestle back the societal peace the progressive leftists have been allowed to run roughshod over for so long because of the weak republicans. the far leftists present Real violence and the majority of the more balanced American populace don’t want to get involved if it threatens their status quo. they don’t realize that complacency has a cost that gets steeper every day.

“blood-and-soil brand of economic nationalism”

Why that sounds positively…Ukrainian
Or fascist
Or nazi

Are we going to get a new red-and-black Party flag?

Yep , looking back it seems the neo-cons said to the Democratic Party “let us have our wars and international trade” you guys can control everything at home.

Now it’s going to be a tough uphill climb on slick ground. Because we’ve let them have 3 decades to indoctrinate a good part of our young generation.

Yes. Buchanan was the Moses of MAGA. I wish he was alive to see that his ideas have triumphed. He was a happy warrior.

Buchanan was the real deal. He defended Nixon until the bitter end by first exposing the corrupt alliance of the deep state, left wing press and Democrats. Recall that Nixon slaughtered the Democrats in the 1972 election with the largest landslide ever. Watergate let them off the mat.

I liked Buchanan quite a bit, but the GOP is much more like Ross Perot’s Party than his. Pat came from politics whereas DJT, like Perot, comes to politics from the business sector.

I have referd to myself as Buchanan republican the last 25 years. when asked to explain my conservatism... The republican party took a wrong direction after Regan left office. deep in the pit of my stomach I knew this but looked at democrat liberalism as a bigger danger.

Nonsense from the Left.
Pat was anti Israel and tool of the left to split the vote.
The MSM is pulling out all the stops to save Biden.

Everyone who is against the demon party is a something nationalist. Nationalist being a word they use solely because the NAZIs did. These pathetic actors are reaching the end of their string and that is because they are who they are-modern day nazis.

What is obvious, is the Left in the USA is anti-nationalist. They hate the nation, the Constitution, the very idea of limits on government power is abhorrent to them.

It is one of the major reasons they are working so hard to destroy the country and Western civilization.

For all the reservoirs of digital ink spilled on the hallowed self-made origins of Vance's unique American success story, the Hillbilly Elegy author is plainly the spiritual offspring of the Buchanan movement.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This is typical leftist, Bolshevik Marxist analysis.

The populist movement under Trump has nothing to do with the so called ideology of Pat Buchanan. Pat was an outlier in his view, but he still was a country club Republican who did not truly understand the huge reservoir of political energy vested in Americas blue collar workers and their direct lift to the US economy.

The populist movement required an awakening of a whole section of our population that Biden could not understand or access because he was a country club elitist. He did not know the yeomanry of America. Donald Trump does, that's where he made his living. JD Vance understands it because he grew up in it.

Buchanan had a few passing aspects of his view that are similar to populism, such as putting America first in a way that would lead to isolationism. MAGA does not lead to isolationism, but to a renewed economic world of reciprocity, which decries isolationism. The Marxists like Lehman are quick to try and lead us astray to conclude that populism equates with isolationism on the international stage. That's just plain and purposefully deceptive.

Putin will come to the table. If he does not then his very life would likely be forfeit.Same with Xi. A new sheriff is coming to town and people like Lehman do not like that one bit.
