I've never had this problem before, been growing all sorts of veggies for many years, but this year has been a problem. For one I had very little success growing beans of all things, usually one of the easiest. So I planted a whole packet of seeds (Blue Lake pole) and I have about 6 plants. I tried another pack and soaked them overnight, which I've only done a few times before. Not only hardly any sprouted, but the ones that did are not pole beans, they are bush beans. Both packages were miss labeled. Also, a pack of zucchini seeds turned out to be yellow summer squash. Anyone else having these problems?
I grew these Minnesota Midget melons...they went crazy....8 plants...40 melons. They're cantalopes...serve one...They were awesome.
I buy my watermelons...they take up too much room in the garden.
I kept my tomato plants in one BIG bed...with border of basil, spinach, lettuce, green onions.
We had frost advisories right up to the end of May, so my garden didn’t go in until June 5.
Over two weeks later, I had nothing (never happened before). So I replanted.
Of all things, brussels sprouts are doing best. I only have about four bean plants now, which is highly unusual. They usually flourish in my garden.
Now I have cucumber plants popping up all over the place.
The problem is, this being northern Minnesota, it may be too late for everything.
This has been a really weird year.
Oldest Daughter grows Bradfords to sell and does very well with them.
I planted 18 Zuchinni seeds, all the same technique, 7 came up. I’ve never had that poor performance previously.
I am in southern Michigan. Had the same thing. Third planting of beans and they finally came up. Only had 4 pea plants come up. Weird.
Is your seed company bragging about their new DEI successes on the seed label?
Ping your list?
What’s your growing zone? If you still have time, re-plant. I plant bean seeds a number of times through the season in my Zone 5 garden. This weekend I am pulling out some lettuce and broccoli plants that are totally past their prime and re-seeding with BEANS. :) I’ll re-plant LOTS of salad greens and broccoli again in the Fall.
My problem with beans is always, ALWAYS Chipmunks. Don’t overlook the fact that you’re probably losing some to those diggers, as well as Squirrels.
An old saying about direct seeding any crop:
“One for the blackbird,
One for the crow,
And that will leave
Just two to grow.”
Substitute ‘Chippies and Squirrels’ in that saying for my garden. ;)
Make Dilly Beans when you have too many beans. You will be a HERO to many! :)
I made them a few seasons back and friends and family are begging for more. Kinda ‘putzy’ but SO worth the effort.
Great for bartering when TSHTF. You could probably get a bottle of Whiskey or a brand new truck for them, LOL!

Thanks for the Heads Up!
Good web page about inoculants:

(This was new info. to me.)
I started 40 plants from seed thinking I would get about half instead they all sprouted. And it has kept on that way.
Is as if God finally heard all the prayers I made for my beans for the past four years and looked down and said, "Thou shalt have BEANS!" If only he would bless my tomatoes that way.
I am re-planting, different brand, back to Burpee, never had a problem. I’m in Zone 6, but still enough time. We have plenty of squirrels, but no chipmunks here, although a few miles away there are plenty. The squirrels are too busy robbing the birds suet to dig up the seeds!
Hah! We have more tomatoes (red & yellow) than we know what to do with them, giving some away to friends. We’ll be lucky to get a pound of beans until the second crop. If we were neighbors, we could trade beans for ‘maters.
I thought of one other thing at 3am this morning, LOL!
Beans need WARM soil for good germination. Could that first planting been put in the ground too early?
I had another poster with that same problem earlier this season - they had put their beans into cool soil and got little germination.
Now that it’s MORE than warm, you should see them pop right up in a matter of days. Keep them well watered, too! :)
I made the Rookie Mistake one year of planting not one, but, TWO big plantings of Pole Green Beans.
OMG! We were SO sick of beans! Of course, we ate them all, but my kid still mentions ‘The Green Bean Year’ from time to time. ;)
No, soil was warm. I even tried in small pots, got the same results. Just bad seed I guess.
Unfortunately, I threw the packets away.
But this year I am doing a couple of canners full plus every week. Oh well, we will be stocked up in case next year is not a good year.
