Family meal at Dennys. How much you think it cost?
Self/Chat | 6/23/24 | Self/Chat

Ok, so, yesterday we went to Dennys.

My wife got a Cobb salad, no drink.

I and my son both got chicken fried steak and eggs (they call it country fried because people today think chicken fried steak has chicken).

I got coffee, the boy got a milkshake.

Three entrees, two drinks.

What do you think the total was after tax but before tip?

I’ll say in the comment.

The food cost you $35.00...the California regs./SDI/minimum wage cost you the rest.

“ Huh? That should have been at least $20-25 less.

Wow.”

I know. It’s amazing. I agree.

I take it for granted now but just thought about it for a second, a moment of clarity, and figured I’d post it.

Plus a 20-percent tip and we are talking $87 for a dinner for three with no desserts!

Inflation is real.

Yep.

This is happening everywhere. I know people complain or excuse depending on their bias as good that people cut back on fast food, but it is also these sit-down restaurants which are becoming too expensive for families.

Put these in terms of the local minimum wage, maybe $7.50 or even $15. That's as many as 10 hours of work for that simple family meal.

Restaurants are for people with money to blow. I haven’t been to ANY restaurant in probably 1.5 years because the last time I went I seriously felt I had been robbed.

I would have guessed $55 but then I saw you are in California so I would have said $120. You got a real bargain at $72. :-P

Had a family get-together a few weeks ago — 4 of us — at a local restaurant.

Total bill for modest meals was just over $100.

I had a burger, fries, salad and drink — roughly $25.

[I could have fixed a burger, fries, salad, drink AND dessert at home for under $5.00.]

That is why I only eat out on special occasions.

Me and the missus go to this Diner down the way. We were out late and driving home, we stopped in instead of cooking. Two burgers W/fries or Onion rings. I drank water, she got Ice tea. It was $45 with a $5 tip added. At a Diner. We used to eat breakfast there before Covid, it was $22 no tip added. The same breakfast this time for 4 as we had family visit, was $85. 2 Omelets, 2 biscuits and gravy, 3 coffees, 1 soda.

Shame on you for eating at Denny's! That's not food. Chickfila would have had similar items, better tasting and you would have gotten away under $50. Hey, it's your money and stomach.

“Tax that tip!”

Actually, some, if most of the credit card machines now include the sales tax when calculating the tip.

It’s TOTALLY out of control as tips are now EXPECTED and restaurant workers are almost to the point of calling the cops on you if you don’t tip.

That’s right. Denny’s is not all that.

Imagine a good restaurant price.

[$72
Again, before tip.

What do people think?]

Cracker Barrel is pricier. Waffle House is cheaper.

Locally most establishments charge 3.49-3.99 for a freaking fountain drink.
