A week ago I wrote about a Hertz President Circle member charged $277 for returning a rented Tesla without filling it with gas. That’s the second-most Hertz thing ever, after getting arrested because the rental company reported the car you rented stolen.
And just like getting arrested just for being a Hertz customer – and Hertz refusing to admit its mistake lest the police stop believing them when they file false police reports – appears to be anything but a one-off. Being charged exorbitant rates for not filling up the gas on an electric vehicle seems to be a systemic problem for this very broken rental car agency.
It turns out that Hertz charging Tesla EV customers for gas wasn’t a one-off. They’ve been doing it for ages, and frequently. Sometimes customers get the money refunded because EVs don’t take gas while other times customers bang their head against the Hertz customer service wall, being told that charges cannot be adjusted.

So far Hertz has been berry berry good to me.
But Budget recently offered me a 50% discount on my rental for taking the EV (Genesis) which I did, of course. And then they reneged, of course.
Sad. Organized crime, thy name is car rental.

I am assuming this is semantics and they are bringing the electric vehicles back without fully charging them.
I will cheer when Hertz is out of business.
you have the option to pay extra when you originally rent and for a small fee you can bring it back empty if you want. But you are playing with fire bringing it back empty or drained.
I have always thought it would be very profitable for them in pair rental car places with a gas station.
Buy some gas and a can and before you turn it in open a window and pour the gas in
I would avoid an EV rental in general. This is just another reason.
This would be perfect opportunity for an OJ Simpson commercial.
Have OJ cut the throat of people that don’t recharge their cars.
I am sure Hertz has plenty of charging stations on site.
Penalizing customers for not returning their vehicles with a full charge is horrific customer relations.
Hertz has MASSIVE debt on its balance sheet.

Instead they got hit with a $340.97 ‘Skip the Pump’ fee, “Hertz’s customer service was difficult to reach, and that it took making a ruckus on social media to get Hertz’s attention.”...so instead of being charged $25 he was charged $340.97. Doesn't sound like semantics to me...
I assume Hertz is charging the customer for the extended time it takes the company to recharge the battery. They can’t rent it out again until the battery is fully charged.
I am assuming the customer was an idiot.
$25 sounds like what it would have cost to pay before you took the car for the right to return it empty or not fully charged.
It can take hours to charge an electric car, bringing it back empty means some employee has to be paid to take it to a charging station and then wait for hours.
The person renting did not read or understand their contract.

What happened to the “fast charging” charging stations we keep hearing about—Hertz does not have those on site?
