My last post of the day, but couldn't help the joke about a "false banana' in the headline. Is that a transy banana? Any way the article says it is good for porridge, I guess the BBC wants all of us to eat porridge, just like Goldilocks.

I’ve never tried. Maybe.

Pics of the fruit are misleading. According to gastro websites, the fruit is inedible. The stem and roots can be processed into a goo that is used instead of flower to make a bread-like substance. Probably would kill the plant, though. So not sure how this “food” is supposed to supplant already widely available staples.

I’d think that if it was even slightly tasty, we’d see it oustide of tribal lands in Ethiopia, though.

Scientists say the plant enset, an Ethiopian staple, could be a new superfood and a lifesaver in the face of climate change.

I really do wish these do-gooders would just mind their own business.

They were a little heavy handed weren’t they when they chose those two bananas for the comparison photo?

They should just use breadfruit and jackfruit. Tropical, grow on trees and you do not have to kill the plant to harvest the food portion.

Breadfruit

Jackfruit

There are certain foods I have seen and eaten around the world that remain local favorites because anyone who has something else to eat does.

This story really has nothing to do with climate change, but their research and this article will get much wider circulation if they keep saying “climate change”.

If this stuff will feed Africa, great.

Article makes me feel Africa is a very primitive place, with way too many people to feed.

How about OKRA? My wife says it is a “super food”. It will grow when nothing else will and produce when everything else in the garden is shriveled to straw in the hottest, driest part of summer. You can bol it, bake it, fry it, pickle it or just eat it raw if you dare. Aside from all of these merits I read that it has almost no nutritional value as it has almost no calories. Great stuff, sort of like a false banana. I suppose you could also make porridge out of OKRA but I never tried that.

Pretty misleading, since it is just the root of the plant that is edible. Also can take 4,000 sq ft to grow enough to feed a family of 5 or 6.

Maize is corn for the north Americans who have never heard what the rest of the world calls corn. There was a study done where they took blood and tissue biopsies from volunteers and isotopic analysis of the carbon atoms in those samples from a wide range of Americans who gave the samples. 80% of the carbon in the typical American body can be directly traced to corn. Corn is the basis of the N American food web. It is used to feed every species of livestock in north America who pass that carbon to those who eat it. In addition to all the corn flakes , corn tortillas and corn syrup that Americans guzzle. Diversity in food sources is a good thing ask the Irish and their near total reliance on the potato how than worked out for them. If I was an evil Chinese genius I would develop a corn blight virus that’s not only airbone but also formite spread by animals particularly birds then release it via balloons over the great plains and starve 80% or more of North America to death in a few months time. The survivors would be so weak and hungry they would welcome the Chinese with food rations in. Mexico would be decimated as well. The Canadians get more kcals from barley and red wheat but their livestock is still corn feed.
