False banana: Is Ethiopia's enset 'wondercrop' for climate change?
BBC ^ | 1/21/22 | Helen Briggs

Scientists say the plant enset, an Ethiopian staple, could be a new superfood and a lifesaver in the face of climate change.

The banana-like crop has the potential to feed more than 100 million people in a warming world, according to a new study.

The plant is almost unknown outside of Ethiopia, where it is used to make porridge and bread.

Research suggests the crop can be grown over a much larger range in Africa.

Pretty misleading, since it is just the root of the plant that is edible. Also can take 4,000 sq ft to grow enough to feed a family of 5 or 6.

If this stuff will feed Africa, great.

Africa was much better off before the Marxists took control of Rhodesia and turned it into Zimbabwe.

That’s something else “Jimmuh” Carter supported and facilitated.

Yes. And that's called gumbo

If you aren't Canadian, you can go to Cracker Barrel and order fried okra. Good eatin'.

Maize is corn for the north Americans who have never heard what the rest of the world calls corn. There was a study done where they took blood and tissue biopsies from volunteers and isotopic analysis of the carbon atoms in those samples from a wide range of Americans who gave the samples. 80% of the carbon in the typical American body can be directly traced to corn. Corn is the basis of the N American food web. It is used to feed every species of livestock in north America who pass that carbon to those who eat it. In addition to all the corn flakes , corn tortillas and corn syrup that Americans guzzle. Diversity in food sources is a good thing ask the Irish and their near total reliance on the potato how than worked out for them. If I was an evil Chinese genius I would develop a corn blight virus that’s not only airbone but also formite spread by animals particularly birds then release it via balloons over the great plains and starve 80% or more of North America to death in a few months time. The survivors would be so weak and hungry they would welcome the Chinese with food rations in. Mexico would be decimated as well. The Canadians get more kcals from barley and red wheat but their livestock is still corn feed.

We lived in Aiea Hawaii in the late ‘60s.
Our neighbor had several breadfruit trees along with other exotic fruits.
He used to give us breadfruit amongst other produce.
I usually just washed it and cut it in half and baked it like a potato.
It was very good, tasted something like a sweet potato as I recall.

You have never been to Africa I see.

“Article makes me feel Africa is a very primitive place, with way too many people to feed.”

Africa has nearly 2 billion humans more than the EU and North America combined. Every one of them wants and is starting to demand meat, and access to middle class levels of energy consumption. They can see how the West lives and demand the same things now. There will be a huge reckoning when those 2 billion and the 3 billion more in China and India combined also demand middle class European let alone American standards of living and energy consumption. A huge global war is coming over resources China is already in the fight with the belt and road process. This planet is over populated period full.stop. Humans would need 4 earth’s to have 8 billion live at EU levels of energy consumption the math is clear and easy to find if one takes 5 min to look for it. So the choice is everyone fights for the limited resources or we use our technology to move to forever resources those that can be grown renewable again and again plants like this one for example, ocean farming since it’s 75% of the surface area. Salt water agriculture all alone the desert coast’s that line the land surfaces.

Humans already have the tech to turn electricity and CO2 into virtually any chemical via catalysts or synthetic biology and DNA editing. Humans already proved we can take electrons water and CO2 from any source(ocean water, the air, biomass, geological CO2 ect) and make a slew of carbon, hydrogenated, and nitrogenated molecules and compounds. These include simple and complex sugars, starches, alcohols, protein with all 9 amino acids,,lipids+fatty acids, hydrocarbons of various lengths and isomers. The first five of those are commonly called food. Yes alcohol is a food and in the USA a good portion of the population gets half or more of their daily caloric intake from alcohol that’s also easy to look up as fact. Carbs(sugars&starches),protein and lipids are all a monogastric needs plus minerals hint humans are ministries. Humans could make human kibble in electrolytic biofermenter tanks by the millions of tonnes via nuclear power or solar / wind. Sack it up as pellets in 25 or 50kg bags and ship it dry just like livestock feed. Add in warm water and you have a gruel that’s complete nutrient balanced for the useless eater humans of the world. Which is not much different than how humans have lived for thousands of years in staple gruel diets. Only the last century changes that for 5 to 10% of the humans living.

“If this stuff could feed Africa, it already would be.”

There’s no political power or profit to feeding the Great unwashed masses in Africa. That’s why it hasn’t been done. It’s also why Europe ,Australia and now North America face a huge migration from those humans fleeing Africa. Until that is fixed people will still migrate and no amount of deportations will stop it. You literally cannot deport everyone it’s not possible politically or logistically regardless of what the chest thumping keyboard warriors say. The facts prove otherwise no modern country under any leadership has succeeded in that. The Germans with draconian means in WWII couldn’t remove a smaller demographic if they couldn’t with death camps and cattle cars modern society is NEVER GOING to eliminate once present mass migration people not happening. The only thing is fix why they leave in the first place 2 billion mostly young people could swamp any army the West puts together in open conflict as well. Out numbered and our manned literally as most Africans are under 40 and in fighting age the West is old and dying the bulk is 40+

Don’t discount the inherent disfunction of the governments intensified by the well-meaning but counterproductive interference from the west.

question...IF it’s a “superfood” and grows where starving Ethiopians can collect and eat it, WHY are they still starving?
