'Disgust factor' must be overcome if planet-friendly insect food to become mainstream

The "disgust factor" must be overcome if insect-based foods are to become mainstream, according to a study.

Insects can be high in protein and making them more acceptable could help cut the high greenhouse gas emissions that come from farming cattle.

There are also potential benefits for cutting obesity and researchers say the idea of farming insects is gaining more attention.

Hundreds of millions of people in Asia, Africa and Latin America are estimated to already eat insects to some degree.

There are hopes Western attitudes could shift over time, perhaps in a similar way that food such as sushi has become mainstream.

"Insects are a potentially rich source of protein and micro-nutrients and could help provide a solution to the double burden of obesity and undernutrition," said study lead Dr Lauren McGale, from Edge Hill University in Lancashire.

"Some insect proteins, such as ground crickets or freeze-dried mealworms, are cheaper and easier to farm, often lower in fat and have a lower environmental impact than traditional livestock."

However, most people are still very reluctant due to preconceptions over taste and appearance.

But the study also found they were significantly more likely to give insects a go if they are ground into a powder.

"This has been done successfully with rice products fortified with cricket or locust flours in other parts of the world," said co-author Dr Maxine Sharps from De Montfort University.

Only 13% of the 603 people questioned in the UK study said they would be willing to regularly eat insect food.

Some 47% said they wouldn't eat it regularly, and 40% were unsure.

More than 82% of people expected insect food to be crunchy, 64.6% salty, and 62.4% bitter.

They STILL don’t get it.

On a basic level, eating the muscle or organ of an animal is kinda gross.

And yet, we’ve been doing it for millennia. Because it has fueled us and nourished us. And don’t forget, PETA stands for People Eating Tasty Animals.

Sure, John the Baptist ate locusts and wild honey. But that was his CHOICE. At the same time, Jesus ate fish. I don’t recall any line in the Gospel mandating that you must eat X.

Here’s the deal, Karen and Brandon: we don’t eet ze bugz because of the “disgust factor.” We don’t eat them because we embrace freewill and know that Our Betters are pathetic peaked-in-high-school jocks and cheerleaders who believe that we care about what they think.

One more article on eating bugs. It’s obvious that the radical left really wants you to eat bugs and will attempt to make that happen by taxing meat and making it hard to own a farm.

They will have to step up the pace of magazine articles to persuade people that meat is bad and bugs are good.

Eating meat is normal and natural. It’s normal and natural for creatures lower down on the food chain to eat bugs. Then we eat them. It’s the way of nature.

I’ll take this crap more seriously when the White House has a Bug Day, during which all the president’s meals are made from bugs.

Some insects are kosher — John the Baptist ate locusts, no doubt roasted, with honey.

This is like the movie Snowpiercer, where the poor people in the back of the train are given protein bars made from insects to eat.

The American farmer can out produce anyone in the world in food production! In the depression of the 1930s the cheapest thing was STEAK!
So the FDR Democrats bought up millions of cattle and hogs, sheep, shot, killed and buried them to get the price of meat UP!

Yet people still starved because there were no jobs to buy that higher priced meat.
In areas away from the Dust Bowl crops were still plentiful.

My Mother-in-law set out sticky traps to catch roaches. They caught quite few. Then she cried about those poor little things and had her husband kill the to keep the roaches from starving to death.

Yeah, that's the trouble with it. Y'know what would help? Legislation to mandate prison terms to people who express disgust about eating insects! /s

Only the progressives, the globalists, the leftists and the commies (and their extended families) should be on an insect-based diet for at a minimum of 20 years in order to prove that they are viable food. Only after that trial should anyone else have to eat bugs. What pathetic, dishonest, arrogant nitwits these people proposing this are.
