Plant-based diet may aid prostate cancer outcomes (Lower meat associated to ~50% less risk)
Medical Xpress / HealthDay / JAMA Network Open ^ | May 6, 2024 | Lori Solomon / Vivian N. Liu et al

Consuming a primarily plant-based diet may be associated with better cancer-specific health outcomes among men with prostate cancer, according to a study.

Vivian N. Liu and colleagues examined whether post-diagnostic plant-based dietary patterns are associated with the risk for prostate cancer progression and prostate cancer-specific mortality. The analysis included 2,062 participants in the multisite Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor study.

The researchers found that men scoring in the highest versus lowest quintile of the Plant-based Diet Index (PDI) had lower risk for progression (hazard ratio, 0.53). There was no association for healthful PDI and risk for progression overall. However, for those with Gleason grade ≥7 at diagnosis (680 men), the highest healthful PDI quintile was associated with a lower risk for progression versus the lowest healthful PDI quintile (hazard ratio, 0.45).

"The findings of this cohort study suggest that plant-based dietary patterns may be inversely associated with risk of prostate cancer progression," the authors write. "These data are consistent with prior research demonstrating the importance of dietary factors in overall health and well-being."

I eat a plant based diet. All the meat I eat comes from a meat processing plant.

There was recently an article on a severe medical consequence from plant based meat. I don’t remember exactly what it was about.

The best proper human diet eliminates sugar, refined carbohydrates, chemically processed meat like ham and hot dogs, and hydrogenated oils.

My wife lost 40 pounds on Carnivore diet. Feels much better. Was having blood sugar problems, shakiness, etc. All that is gone with Carnivore. She eats one or two meals a day with no food cravings. I admit I was skeptical but it has worked great for her.

I have salad for dinner 5 or 6 times a week. Always includes some meat, usually chicken.

There is a plethora of opinion about what is the best kind of diet. Yours makes the most sense.

Any diet that is restrictive enough that you must use supplements to provide nutrition you need, is inadequate and not a good choice.

That’s one of the reasons vegetarian, and esp vegan are not good. They’re too low in calcium, Vitamin D and B12.

Mr. mm and I found that making the changes slowly was the easiest to turn into a lifestyle.

After we got marries, we started using only real butter. We switched to brown, whole grain rice. It’s kind of an acquired taste at first, but we far prefer it now to white rice. And it’s lightyears better for you.

I made my own whole grain bread for years with wheat I ground myself. Wheat berries can be had in places, and using fresh ground flour makes the best bread ever.

I don’t do it as much as before but I can guarantee, it keeps you reguar.

Yup. That, too.

And there are others. But those were just off the top of my head.

They have been pushing eating grass since the early 1960s when early tests showed a broiled steak has carcinogens in it. After the test samples were taken, the scientists ate the steaks.

If I ever had to bug out to my cabin in the mountains in cold weather, I would probably keep a fire running in my old fashioned pot stove to heat the cabin, and. Have a stew pot on top with cut up meat, and whole grain brown rice, whole grain wheat and/or spelt, dried beans, lentils, and whatever greens available thrown in for a few minutes before scooping out a bowl full. This to be kept simmering most of the time, and ingredients added as found, except for tender vegetables. At home I have cooked whole grain whole wheat and spelt and found quite tasty with a bit of butter and salt. Short grain brown rice is said to have a higher protein content than the long grain form, then there is also black rice or wild rice. Black rice is also called Forbidden Rice as it was reserved only for Asian royalty. I wish I could get some live wild rice seed to plant in my pond near my mountain cabin.
