Marines want to wear their uniform for high school graduation, but their school said no
Task & Purpose ^ | May 9 | Patty Nieberg

Three Marines who graduated boot camp in April were looking forward to representing their recent accomplishment at their Colorado high school graduation later this month. That was until they were told by school officials that they would not be allowed to wear their dress blues unless it was covered by a cap and gown.

Thomas Pencis, Jacob Dalton, and Christopher Ferguson went to summer school in order to finish their credits early and attend Marine Corps boot camp before graduating from Centennial High School.

Their school is in Pueblo, Colorado also known as the “Home of Heroes” because it was home to four Medal of Honor recipients: one from World War II, two from the Korean War, and another from the Vietnam War. Four large bronze statues depicting the MOH recipients sit in front of the Pueblo Convention Center, which is also home to active duty troops and veterans. In a statement to Task & Purpose, the Marine Corps said it was “aware of the sentiments expressed by Marines from 8th Marine Corps District who recently graduated high school. We value our relationships with our local high schools and will continue to respect the policies and procedures of all establishments and institutions within our communities and are appreciative of their ongoing support.”......

The story was first reported on Tuesday by a Pueblo television station, KRDO. On Thursday, the three students met with school officials, including a mediator, to find a compromise. The details are still being worked out but in general, the school decided to honor the three Marines at graduation after the presentation of the colors, while wearing their dress blues. Then the students would change into their gowns and pick up their diplomas.

I with the school on this one, cap and gown is the standard, once you allow exceptions your going to start having to allow drag queens on the stage.

Fair enough...as long as Marine regulations don’t prohibit the wearing of the gowns over the uniforms.

I guarantee you that if a drag queen wanted on stage it wouldn’t be a problem. It would be welcomed with open arms

Agreed. They are graduating with their high school classmates, not their fellow trainees.

I agree. This could turn into a "camel's nose under the tent" scenario.

Ditto

Cap and gown to cross the stage
Uniform for the reception afterward

It isn’t called a uniform because they want you to stand out. Swallow your pride for a few hours and wear what everyone else is wearing because it’s a school ceremony, not a military one.

“Marines want to wear their uniform for high school graduation, but their school said no”

“That was until they were told by school officials that they would not be allowed to wear their dress blues unless it was covered by a cap and gown.”

In other words they can wear their uniform, as long as they wear the cap and gown as well, like all the other graduates.

Bowing down to Drag Queens is now basically required by Biden, but I guess the military can still be spit on (as the leaders of their school no doubt did during their earlier days).

I wonder if other countries treat their soldiers the same...

The cap and gown is a formal dress to show achievement.

Earning the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor is on a much higher level of achievement.

As a Marine, I say let them wear the Blues.

This is an annual story.

Valedictorians get a different color sash to wear. Some decorate their cap with University logos where they’ve been accepted and some times political causes...

Let them wear the Dress Blues.

An annual event repeated multiple times. From dress blues to American Indians insisting to be able to wear an eagle feather. No to all of it. Stick with the standard or don't attend the proceedings. One size fits all in this case.

Still very proud of their achievement. It eclipses high school graduation.

I disagree.

The “uniform of the day” is cap and gown. There is no requirement or prohibition for what is worn underneath. Unless USMC regulations prohibit wearing blues under the gons, with the cap replacing the normal uniform headgear due to its being covered, the school is correct.

I’m a former Army O-3.

The Marine thing is separate. This is about graduation and the caps and gowns are for everyone....no exception. You don;t like it....stay home.
