A tattooed content creator sparked a debate about hiring biases after being rejected by T.J. Maxx.
Experts said tattoos could influence hiring decisions, especially in customer-facing roles.
But overall, personality and cultural fit are more important, they said.
A TikToker, Ash Putnam, was frustrated after T.J. Maxx denied her application — and she said she thought her tattoos were to blame.
Some of her designs that are visible when she's dressed are a skull with horns on her neck, solid black patches on her arms, and a pattern on her forehead. Putnam, 23, also has multiple facial piercings, including a large silver ring hanging from her septum.
"I hate that my tattoos are such a defining factor for me getting a job or not," she said in a recent TikTok. "Just because I have tattoos doesn't mean I'm not going to be a good worker."
Putnam, from California, said she went into the store to ask why she hadn't gotten the job and that the hiring manager told her she didn't have enough experience. The hiring manager also denied that her tattoos played any role in the rejection, she said. T.J. Maxx did not respond to a request for comment.
She wasn't convinced and took to TikTok to complain. Many commentators claimed her attitude may have been to blame, rather than her tattoos. Others said they thought her body art likely played a role in the rejection.
While the jury is out over whether tattoos can damage your prospects of being hired, experts told BI that the personality of a candidate was likely more important for recruiters.

I’d not only kick her out of bed, I’d put up force fields to keep her at least a mile away from me at all times.
She’s TOXIC.
I’m always attracted to asking them if I can pop their zits....
Good thing my wife has me under control....
Customer service jobs require one to interact with the public. Ain’t no one gonna interact with that
My question is this..
She’s got about 2500 in tattoos, about a 1000 in piercings about lord knows where she got the horns, but in 2005 that was an 8000 odyssey into the dark underbelly of body mods.
Tj Maxx? What was going on before tj maxx?
So she is instead accusing them of lying about the reason.
She can’t accept that maybe she’s just terrible at what she does.
And she honestly expects to get a job as a *content designer*??????
Just what the heck is that anyways?
Maybe she should learn a real job skill.
Like so many in her generation.
I’ve had to interview and hire procurement and subcontracts staff on several occasions. Thank goodness I’ve never gotten one of those. I suspect HR screens those out before they get to me - if any even apply.
She should be in a zoo, NOT a place of employment.
The only way I’d hire that weirdo is if I owned a circus.
Hideous.
I’m a weirdo - I’m a sucker for pretty, symmetrical tattoos on women. Went a little too far on the face for my taste, though.
And that huge septum piercing just kills it for me.
I’ve been to cosmetic counters and had well-tattooed women help me. Often, they are most knowledgeable about makeup because of their enjoyment of body modification. When you go with the latter, often they started with makeup.
My brother-in-law’s wife has a lot of tattoos and piercings and has a cosmetology license. She’s very good at it.
Not accurate. I have, “LOVE” tattooed on my right hand in a font of my own design. It’s faced towards me for ME to see, and a reminder that I’m loved by someone somewhere regardless of what life looks like at the moment.
Any tattoos I have or will have are going to be sentimental and have meaning.
I work my a§ off and don’t get paid enough to do it. After having been as sickly as I was, and still kind of am, I have to work twice as hard to make up for lost time.
Angelina is a sicko weirdo, IMO. When she was married to Billy Bob Thornton, they each had a vial of the other’s blood around their necks on a necklace.
Store manager should have just told her that they have too many white people working there. That seems like a legitimate reason these days.
Job in some sideshow.
Well, there’s always the circus.
not the tats. it’s the metal booger. grosses me every time.
the person in the picture looks like one of those Day of the Dead folk.
with all her hardware, SHE had plenty of openings.
this poster is fantastic!
