No need to make a stink: Controlling bovine flatulence could be key to helping curb global warming.
New research suggests that breeding dairy cows to fart less — and, therefore, release less methane — could cut down on greenhouse gases.
The team from Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute in Australia combed through 27 reports, drawing conclusions about various ways to curb methane emissions in the dairy and beef sectors in the country.
Food production is one of the leading causes of climate change — livestock farming accounts for about 10% of greenhouse gas emissions — with one 2020 study finding that burps and farts from cattle, as well as manure management, are a significant contributor to global warming.
The latest study, published in the journal Climate this month and the first of its kind, suggests that transforming farmland into forest or wetland would be most effective at reducing methane, but breeding less gassy cows may also be an avenue worth exploring.
“For example, changing what breeding objectives include can permanently reduce methane production,” study author Merideth Kelliher said in a statement.
“Studies have found low emission cattle have inheritable genetic traits which can significantly reduce methane production if included in national breeding objectives,” she added.

Grant easements for farmers where their taxes are significantly reduced in exchange for a commitment to plant trees on 10% of their farmland. At maturity these trees will add 20% CO2 sequestering capacity to existing forests. It will also create new economic opportunities depending on the type of trees planted.

Has there ever been any studies to place value on other living things when discussing farting? For example rate cows vs Rep Shiela Jackson-Lee! Cows produce valuable milk and meat and are pleasant to look at in the pasture even though they produce some fart. Lee produces nothing except farts and when she is in the pasture her scenic value is?..........OMG!

So true. Let me tell you a short story about animal husbandry. I grew up on a small farm and my dad taught me some practical tips about raising cattle. Ruminants can’t fart because of their complicated digestive system. They have a multi-compartmental stomach consisting of four parts. In the spring when the grass and legumes were lush, especially in the early morning hours iwith the dew on the forage cows could overeat and bloat. This was especially bad with alfalfa and clover. The wet forage, once swallowed, could produce so much gas in the first stomach that the cow could become distended and go down if the animal could not burp up the gas on its own accord. You had to keep an eye on your animals if you turned them out on fresh spring forage. This situation could actually kill the animal and measures had to be taken quickly to assist a distressed animal to help it expel the gas. We used to take a broomstick sized pole and rope it across the mouth like a bit and over the head to cause the animal to chew on the pole, which then helped the animal expel the trapped gas. In extreme cases, you had to take emergency measures and puncher the stomach wall with a knife to relieve the gas to permit the downed animal to breath.
