Our ideas of the colours of the planets Neptune and Uranus have been wrong, research led by UK astronomers reveals.
Images from a space mission in the 1980s showed Neptune to be a rich blue and Uranus green.
But a study has discovered that the two ice giant planets are both similar shades of greenish blue.
It has emerged that the earlier images of Neptune had been enhanced to show details of the planet's atmosphere, which altered its true colour.
"They did something that I think everyone on Instagram will have done at some time in their life, they tweaked the colours," Prof Catherine Heymans, Astronomer Royal for Scotland and a University of Edinburgh astrophysics professor, told BBC Radio 4's Today.

Do you know which planet formed first?
It was Uranus, because Neptune got its gas from Uranus.
Astronomy is the hobby of very intelligent people.
In order to fund their hobby they make things more spectacular to attract grants and funding.
I was an engineer at a world class observatory for almost ten years. I know.
Academia is academic fraud.
I remember back when I was doing research and scanning the CBD daily for leads on government contracts. I remember one from NASA/NOAA regarding GOES data that had been collected over the years.
They were looking for offerors who had proposals to ‘process’ the enormous amount of data they’d collected to see if there was anything ‘useful’ in it.
Teen or seen?
Thanks.
For other confused people, itโs โseen in true colorsโ not teen.
I thought maybe there was another meaning of teen.
Seen.
I dont understand why these planet-related stories are still using the old name for the planet. Years ago scientists/astronomers officially changed the name to finally stop all of the disrespectful jokes. I wish everyone would just forget about the old name of Uranus and refer to it by the new name...Urectum.
The first time you see Uranus can be a life changing event
Except for some who get their heads all up in it...
Slow news day - what a waste of money....
I thought they found teens on those two planets. ๐ค. ๐ธ
Whoever named Uranus probably chuckled thinking of all the jokes that would be made of its name in the centuries to come.
From the title, who is “Uranus Teen?”
Might it be David Hogg? Or that Congressional staffer who filmed himself receiving in a Senate meeting room recently?
Herschel, the discoverer, wanted to name it Georgium Sidus in honor of George III. Others wanted it to be called Herschel.
Herschel would have been better than Uranus. Maybe someone can get a petition going to change the name. ๐
At this point it's probably too late to change the name of the planet but maybe they could spell the name Uranos or Ouranos.
When I took an astronomy class the professor pronounced the name with the accent on the first syllable and the "a" as a short "a." Of course then it sounds too much like "urine."
