Gen Z's struggles with anxiety are affecting their dining habits with most admitting to dealing with "menu anxiety" in restaurants, a new survey finds.
British restaurant chain Prezzo, which serves Italian cuisine, surveyed over 2,000 people in the UK about how at ease they felt when they ate out and it found that 86% of Gen Z had been impacted by "menu anxiety" when dining in restaurants compared to 67% of all respondents.
Menu anxiety was largely trigged by the cost of the meal, not being able to find something they like on the menu, and regretting what they ordered. Over a third of millennials said having too many options on a menu was also a trigger.
38% of Gen Z and millennials said they wouldn't go to a restaurant if they hadn't looked at the menu beforehand. A third of Gen Zers also said they ask other people to order at restaurants because of this anxiety.
Another source of anxiety for almost half of 25 to 34 year olds is not being able to pronounce the options on the menu when ordering.
Young people are also largely influenced by their social media use. A third of 25 to 34 year-olds would choose items on a menu that would look best on social media.
The younger generation tend to have more hang ups about how they appear in public, and a recent Gallup poll even found that they're more likely to report experiencing negative emotions such as stress, anxiety, and loneliness.
NYU business professor Jonathon Haidt told the Wall Street Journal that a "performative" social media culture is partly to blame for the high rates of anxiety and depression amongst Gen Z.
"We have a whole generation that's doing terribly," he said. "You're not creative, you're not future-thinking..."

“The younger generation tend to have more hang ups about how they appear in public...”
Once again, it’s the narcissism. Humble yourself. Pray to God to help take away your pride. Remember even the richest man on the planet looks like an idiot sometimes. A lot of that anxiety will melt away.
Pathetic. Is mommy still wiping their butts?
The interview restauranteur is from an Italian chain, which is not a hard language to learn. "Pizza with extra pineapple, per favore, and a large mug of birra" works for me.
Wasn’t THAT long ago that the only choice of meal for then Gen Z’ers...was K-rations.
Don’t wanna end up with snails and brains.
I am not sure if I can afford it, go some place cheaper or learn to cook.
Can't find something I like on the menu, then stand up and go some place else. Also learn to cook.
I might regret what I ordered. Happens to all of us. Suck it up buttercup. Or learn to cook and make what you like.
I might believe there are some people this neurotic out there but not as many as they say.
They are literally trolling for neurotic people "Do YOU have ___Fill in what ever stupidity they are pushing today___? Take our survey and find out!" You are only going to catch the very bored and very neurotic.
Gen z: I’m scared, what do, I order. The GI Generation thier 20’s: Freezing in the snow for freedom in Germany.
They should just stay at home and microwave that instant mac and cheese momma used to leave on the counter for them.
What else would you expect from the selfie generation?
I’ve got Idiocracy cued up for tonight. My son’s never seen it and I haven’t seen it in years. I bet I’ll pick up on some things I missed back then.
What the Gen Z’s describe here are very common thoughts that most people have flitting here and there within their minds.
The big difference is these people feel the need to publicize these thoughts of uncertainty. Many of them see admitting/ advertising/ exaggerating/ embellishing and ‘sharing’ their fears will become a way to bond with other young people.
Maybe it’s what used to be called an “Ice Breaker”, where a light topic is brought up, to amuse and entertain before rolling out more private info about yourself.
SSSSLLLLAAAPPPPP!
language anxiety if the menu is in a foreign language

Off topic but I recently discovered my phone has a translator!
I put in translator mode and the words are translated from what ever it is to English. Even works on computer screens.
I am pretty sure these GenZers are more tech savvey them me.
The inadequacies of the young generation are frustrating.
But young people are shaped by their parents, their schools, and more recently, by the issues with social media. Young people have been sucked into a bad situation all around. And COVID was a disaster for them. And the economy is terrible. As far as I can see, the deck is stacked against the young today and it's not surprising to me that they are doing terribly.
Berating them for being losers will achieve nothing. But I don't know of any constructive methodology that would help troubled people in their 20s suddenly surmount the problems and become high-functioning mature adults.
I suspect that this is a problem that will persist across the country for decades.
