New NFL Rule Causes Record-Low Kick Returns
Daily Caller ^ | September 12, 2023 6:11 PM ET | ANDREW POWELL

The NFL is getting exactly what they want.

League rule-makers perfectly executed their plans in Week 1 of the 2023 campaign, recording a historically low kickoff return rate of 20.5% — exactly what the NFL was looking for in a rule change aimed at encouraging teams to kick un-returnable balls.

In a single week of games, the return rate was the lowest it’s ever been since at least 2000, according to ESPN Stats and Information. This data wasn’t recorded prior to that year; however, the four-letter network also noted the 20.5% tally was the lowest in NFL history based on frequency of returns in prior eras. The Week 1 touchback rate was 77.6% — the highest since 2000 and also likely a league record.

Owners approved a one-year experimental rule back in May that spots the ball at the 25-yard line regardless of whether or not kickoff returners called for a fair catch while being inside the 25. The rule drastically decreased the advantage of “pop-up” kicks that are short of the goal line, which grew in popularity as a strategy to pin teams near their goal line. However, the strategy caused an increase of returns the last two years, causing a rise in concussions, NFL competition committee chairman Rich McKay told NFL Network.

Less concussions for the league to deal with, so I can’t blame ’em for the move. Carry on, NFL.

Speaking of, there is one out gay player in the NFL, Carl Nassib. And yet they don’t cover him all that much, you would think the only out gay player would be all over the media.

The reason? He’s a Trump supporter.

“...Silencing the Commentators...”

It would be a giant plus to turn off the commentators and turning on the half-time shows at both NFL and NCAA games.

College rule changes to keep the clock moving unless inside finsl 2 minutes. Was supposed to speed up the game. Innovative coaches now on offense hold the ball until final few seconds on every offensive play to burn clock thus they are playing defense by limiting the opponents possessions. Saturday saw an average of 40 minutes more commercials. It helps a poor team limit a high powered offense and gives an undoubtedly better chance.

We could see more upsets and now more commercials.

Follow the 💰

I did not know that. I like it. And how about they kickoff from their own 10 yard line? That would spice things up!

And I say, if a Field Goal is good after deflecting off the helmet of an opposing player, that’s worth 21 points. Let’s really make it interesting.

Speaking of the NFL and for anyone else who was curious, from a couple of days ago...

Bills' Damar Hamlin 'Healthy Inactive' at Jets Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin incredibly made the 53-man roster for this season, but he won't make his debut against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.

Ties at the end of regulation should be handled similar to soccer:

Ball placed on the 50 yard line and kickers take turns trying for a field goal. Whoever hits first wins............

Well that’s what the Manningcast is. It’s supposed to be like watching the game with your friends, if your friends were the Mannings. Casual, fun, and not a lot of analysis. Over on ESPN was the “real” broadcast. Of course Joe Buck and Troy are pretty dull.

There was a game last week where each team got one possession in the entire 3rd quarter.

That would certainly increase 2 point attempts. Since a failed 2 pointer will pin the other team inside the 2 90% of the time. I like it, but the rules committee would crap all over that.

Make them 30 yard Fields goals, only you have to have regular players kicking, and not the placekickers.

The 2-point attempts should be made from the same place as the extra point kicks.
