Democratic New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is coming under fire from members of her own party after temporarily suspending open and concealed carry across Albuquerque under an emergency health order.
"I support gun safety laws. However, this order from the Governor of New Mexico violates the U.S. Constitution. No state in the union can suspend the federal Constitution. There is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution," California Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu tweeted.
Lujan Grisham temporarily suspended open and concealed carry laws in Bernalillo County for at least 30 days, starting Sept. 8. The announcement was spurred by the fatal shootings of young children, including a 13-year-old girl in July, a 5-year-old girl in August and an 11-year-old boy this month.
"As I said yesterday, the time for standard measures has passed," the governor said, according to her office’s press release on the order. "And when New Mexicans are afraid to be in crowds, to take their kids to school, to leave a baseball game – when their very right to exist is threatened by the prospect of violence at every turn – something is very wrong."
Liberal gun control activist David Hogg responded to Lieu saying that he "agreed" that the order violates the Constitution, and followed up that Lujan Grisham’s reasoning for the temporary ban does not hold water.
"I support gun safety but there is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution," Hogg posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Hogg appeared to follow up in another post saying "one of the things I appreciate most about the Democratic Party is we are not in a cult," and members hold different views on issues such as gun control.

I never thought I would see the day where I agree with David Hogg on anything that involves firearms law... but the kid is right. You can’t (constitutionally-) suspend 2A rights with an emergency order, especially one rooted in a health-crisis.
Leftists/Libs/Dems may be feigning complaints for the gov’s actions, but they are taking notes and waiting to see how this plays out.
If the gov gets away with it, every leftist state in the union will pull similar tactics.

All of the liberals who are “turning” on her are only doing so because they know open attempts at gun banning are sure losers. They know that Democrats will pay an electoral price if they don’t disavow it.
Meanwhile, they will still act behind the scenes to take away gun rights in a more piecemeal fashion through hidden regulation and manipulation of the markets.

Yeah, that’s what I want to know. I thought the Constitution was the law made by a bunch of evil white slaveholders and therefore should be torn up in favor of something that guarantees reparations and abortion rights in perpetuity. Oh, and if they could get rid of speech, beliefs, and people they don’t like that would be great too.
What is their real motive in becoming such ardent defenders of the Constitution now? Maybe the governor did this too early?
Next up: They’ll be going for a repeal of the 2nd Amendment, like George Will has been telling them all along.
This is a major overreach by the Governor. The Left prefers incremental steps obfuscated by popular, poll-tested slogans. That is why they are speaking out, not because of the Constitution, but because this Governor showed their hand.
Makes me wonder if they aren’t angling for a Constitutional amendment to make it possible.

The only reason they griped is because this is supposed to be done stealth, not flat out and obviously un Constitutionally.
You can repeal the 2nd amendment or the 1st or the 4th. Federal Constitution is based upon enumerated powers. The Fed still cannot change the right to keep and bear arms nor regulate speech nor conduct warrantless searches.

As soon as a government official does something that violated the constitution and its amendments, the public (the official’s bosses) should demand the official’s resignation, and the official should have no option other than to obey the public’s request, immediately!.
