Roof color slide - my uncle, may he rest in peace, had a house built in Florida when they moved there from Columbus, Oh some 20-25 years ago. He spec’ed things a little different. Longer overhangs to provide shade to the windows in the high sun, and a white shingle roof rather than dark like almost everyone else in the civilized world.
His goal was to keep the AC bills down, and he was pretty shrewd about such things.
Uncle Lew, it is said, was able to get free lodging on a trip one time because he offered to trade repairing the room’s AC for a free night. All he did was clean the outside (condenser) coils which had become caked with dirt. And easy night of free lodging. (probably not a high-end hotel since Uncle Lew was also quite thrifty).

On this date, 18 August 1966, the Battle of Long Tan was fought between elements of the VC and NVA and D Coy, 6th Bn, Royal Australian Regiment. During the battle 108 Australians and New Zealanders held off a force of over 2,000 North Vietnamese. 18 Australians and an estimated 250 Vietnamese were killed.
“Danger Close” is a somewhat dramatized movie version of the battle.
It is known as Long Tan Day and also Vietnam Veteran’s Remembrance Day in Australia.

I used to pay some attention to this issue back in the 90's. What I noticed is that the defendants tend to lose these cases, not on the foundation of the tax law, but on the basis of the members of the jury having paid faithfully for years and they were persuaded that it would not be fair for someone else to be exempt.
Then, afterwards, the IRS would talk up the price of being a tax dodger - while everyone else was doing the right thing.
I don't advocate tax evasion certainly but one wonders if someone not in jeopardy may one day attempt to shed light on this issue. There has always been questions about whether that amendment was properly voted on.
I think that the things mentioned, along with how the buildings were built and codes enforced or not enforced, explain it pretty well.
Waiting to see who they hold responsible. (The guy managing the water should figure high on that list.)

That is the sad/criminal thing. In a fair hearing these arguments may have merit. But in a court room full of people whos salaries and pensions are paid for buy this, no one will get a fair hearing. And any lawyer who dares try will get pounded to let all the others not to go there.
