Nancy Pelosi said that the House had 'no choice' but to impeach Donald Trump when he was in office – and claimed current Speaker Kevin McCarthy is acting out of cowardice of the former president.
The former House Speaker said that Republicans who are still in Trump's pocket are 'pathetic.'
Trump revealed last week that he received a letter from Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith informing the former president that he is a target of the investigation into the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
Meanwhile, reports emerged that McCarthy promised Trump he would have the House vote to expunge his two impeachments before the August recess. He denies these claims.
Following the Capitol attack by Trump supporters attempting to stop certification of the 2020 election results, the then-Democrat controlled House moved to impeach him for the second time.
Ten Republicans voted with Democrats for impeachment the second time around. The charges were stopped from being pursued, however, in the closely-split Senate.
'Well, the president was impeached because we had no choice,' Pelosi explained on CNN's State of the Union program on Sunday morning. 'He had undermined our national security, jeopardized our well-being of our country. I was very careful about bringing any impeachment forward.'
'But when the president made that phone call in terms of Ukraine, there was no choice. We had no choice,' the California Democrat insisted. 'He must be impeached.'
'Kevin is, you know, playing politics,' she added of her successor in the House. 'It's not even clear if he constitutionally can expunge those things. If he wants to put his members on the spot, his members in difficult races on the spot, that's a decision he has to make. But this is not responsible.'
