US Postal Service releases national dog bite rankings

California and Texas ranked highest on the United States Postal Service’s annual list of states with the most dog bites against its employees, the USPS announced.

The report calls attention to the aggressive dog behavior mail carriers often face as the USPS kicks off National Dog Bite Awareness Week.

In 2022, California had the highest number of dog bites with 675. Texas and New York were not far behind with 404 and 321 bites, respectively, the Postal Service reported.

“When our mail carriers are bitten, it is usually a ‘good dog’ that had not previously behaved in a menacing way,” USPS Occupational Safety and Health Senior Director Linda DeCarlo said in a news release.

Houston, Los Angeles and Dallas ranked highest among US cities with the most dog attacks against USPS workers last year, according to the USPS.

More than 5,300 USPS employees were attacked by dogs during mail deliveries last year, according to the Postal Service.

The annual public service awareness campaign, accompanied by the hashtag #dogbiteawareness, runs through next week.

“When letter carriers deliver mail in our communities, dogs that are not secured or leashed can become a nemesis and unpredictable and attack,” Leeann Theriault, USPS employee safety and health awareness manager, said in the release.

LOL! My sister is looking for a job right now (got laid off) and I told her the Post Office is hiring.

I’ve already started calling her, “Cliff.”

Most of these ‘stories’ are written by lazy people that take whatever they are fed by their masters. And with most of these cheap headlines the ranking matches the state population. What really is a problem is the national media saying “California man did xyz” to lay blame to the entire population for some one off event.

Should also scale by the number of deliveries made from vehicles versus by foot. Very hard to bite a carrier in a vehicle.

So the three most populous states had the most dog bites? Go figure.

Dogs intuitively know about people.
Maybe these are the same PO employees that threw away Trump mail in ballots?
If so, NOT GUILTY!

No mention of breeds.

No mention of dog breeds or owner breeds. Or demographics of owners.

Also, the numbers would be a lot more relevant if expressed as per unit of populations. i.e. number of bites per 10,000 residents and XX postal carriers. Otherwise, not worth much. As is most of this drivel written by semi literate HS graduates.

Is she a dog person? Dogs can spot non-dog people. It’s like spotting the animal in the herd that needs to be culled.

I can tell you that in PA, if your dog bites, it will likely be classified as a dangerous dog. You will be required to carry special insurance, keep a muzzle on in public, and your fenced area must include a top.

If you are sued in PA, about 8 years ago, you generally settled for $25k.

I wonder where the scary golden retriever comes in on this list.

The number of bites overall is startling low to me. A few thousand bites (most of which are probably nips) is negligible.

There are other hazards. Turkeys hate that red, white, and blue truck.

“When our mail carriers are bitten, it is usually a ‘good dog’ that had not previously behaved in a menacing way"

That is how put bull owners describe their dogs after they attack someone for no reason.

I read electric meters for a a couple years. There was only one dog I had issues with and I couldn’t get out of the truck. When I saw him at the neighbor’s house he was a good boy.

On another note my dog growing up would always hassle the paperboy. My best friend was our paperboy for a few years and he didn’t get a pass while delivering. When my friend showed up after his route, my dog had no bad words.

These numbers sound reasonable. More than 5,300 USPS employees were “attacked.” Zero deaths or serious injuries reported in the article.

Some of the attacks were certainly justified, and the dogs were doing their jobs defending the home.

Agree. 5300 nationwide isn't much.

Unless you're the guy who gets the bog bite.

I was a summer letter carrier until third year of medical school.

Was it anything like the novel Post Office, by Charles Bukowski? For your sake I hope not.

Yes. Looking at the two largest states without showing a per-capita number is stupid and absolutely worthless.

Lots of drivel these days is probably AI generated.

Probably down in the horrible “goofy, hand-slobber” category.
