Unpublished JFK photo from day of assassination found in thrift store CD case

Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A Texas man who bought a second-hand CD from a small-town thrift shop made a surprising discovery inside the case -- a Polaroid photo of President John F. Kennedy on the day of his assassination.

George Rebeles said he was at the Souls Harbor Thrift Store in Ferris when he decided to buy Bachman Turner Overdrive's The Anthology on CD.

Rebeles said he didn't open the CD case until about a month after the purchase, and he discovered an object inside that he soon realized was a Polaroid photo.

The photo depicted Kennedy riding in his motorcade in Dallas. The date handwritten on the back of the photo was "11-22-63," the day of Kennedy's assassination.

"I was shocked. I was shocked," Rebeles told WFAA-TV. "And that's putting it mildly."

Rebeles said he knew it was an unusual find in a thrift store CD case.

"Of course realized immediately that this was an unpublished photograph. So I was excited," Rebeles said. "It just struck me as odd to find it in a CD case."

Farris Rookstool III, a former FBI analyst and JFK historian, said the photo appears to have been snapped as the motorcade left Love Field, a good distance from the location of the assassination.

"I just hope that someone will look at this and say, 'You know what, this is pretty nice to have something from history, to see something that no one has seen in probably 60 years,'" Rookstool said.

Rebeles said he hasn't yet decided whether to keep the photo or try to sell it to a collector.

The National Archives and Records Administration released nearly 13,000 documents related to the Kennedy assassination in December 2022, acting on an executive order from President Joe Biden. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that 97% of the Kennedy collection is now available to the public.

My Goodwill has stopped having Senior Days as of last summer. Completely turned me off. They used to have a color of the week, too, and for those items of the correct color, they gave 50% off. Boy, I used to get some great deals. Not so much anymore.

I have a beautiful mahogany carved antique bed that I have in my guest room that I found at a flea market, paid $65 for it. It was dusty and full of cobwebs and spider nests. I cleaned that all up, and it’s gorgeous. We had to strengthen the side pieces up, but once we did that, it should last easily for another 100 years. It’s only a full size bed, but perfectly comfortable and so beautiful. Nobody carves wood these days like they used to. So elaborate.

That is so cool. No, you don't find solid wood furniture with elaborate carving any more. There is a certain salvage warehouse in my area which is always offering the masterpieces of yesteryear, great-grandma's exquisite furniture. They also have furniture of every era from great-grandma to contemporary. If you want a 1967 sewing machine on its own table, they have it. If you want stained glass windows, cast iron radiators, old growth lumber, vintage appliances, gorgeous lighting fixtures, granite countertops, bikes, ceiling fans, several generations of hand and power tools, etc., this is the place. I usually go every week and come back with stuff to fulfill specific needs in my house. Found a 12' red oak handrail already outfitted with the wall brackets--$20. To buy the equivalent at Home Depot would have run $185. Long may we thrift!

You sound like me. I used to go every week. I have largely broken the habit of weekly visits, but I do go looking around every couple of months. It’s a great hobby.

The women have helmet head hairstyles and the men wear shortsleeve shirts and ties, in late November.

Ours still have Senior Day and 50% off. (Only one discount though.) The clerk told me 80% of their sales on Tuesday are to seniors. I am stocking a shed to sleep in so I need some household items. The thing I don’t like are those you see searching e-bay on their phone to get a price on an item to see if they can buy and re-sell.

Polaroid cameras were rare back then, but they were around.

It does look like a photo of that day, but what confirmed it for me was Jackie’s hat.

Sounds like he was taking care of business. Thanks Red Badger.

I was at a thrift store and saw a poster, signed by the cast of some musical that I knew my daughter liked.

When I went to purchase it, suddenly it was “not for sale” by the scumball that owned the place.

I hear you. I used to think about selling on eBay, but I like the stuff I’ve found more than any measly profit I might’ve gotten from selling it on eBay. It’s just never been worth that for me. Happy thrifting!

Well, the person who put it in the CD case had seen it.

I found a book by Jimmy Carter that both he and the first lady Rosalyn had signed. It was 50 cents.

Well, it's not worth a cent, you overpaid.

Yeah, I love Cutco knives. Have a drawer full of them. I’m pretty sure whoever donated that had zero idea of what they’d done. Luckily for me, the people putting the prices on them had no idea either. It had been marked for 70 cents and then I used my senior discount for it for 30% less. That was my best find ever. Hubby once found a working Sonos speaker for $10, that we got for $7. That was another nice find.
