The Trump administration has finalized a roll back of Obama-era regulations for oil trains.
The rules, which date back to 2015, required railroads carrying crude oil or other flammable liquids to outfit their trains with more responsive electronic braking systems. The rules came in response to concerns about explosions and spills from mile-long trains of crude and ethanol. In the Northwest, those trains move along the Columbia River and through cities to coastal refineries.
The U.S. Department of Transportation, which has been working on rescinding the rules since last December, said in statement this week that its analysis showed the cost of requiring railroads to equip trains with the new brakes outweighed the potential benefits.
The rail industry has resisted the new braking requirements. The American Association of Railroads, a freight rail industry group, had previously attempted to appeal the Obama administration’s decision, stating that the rules imposed unreasonably high costs to railroads and that the government had overstated the benefits of the brakes.

Why is it a catastrophe? Thousands of tank cars travel the rails each day. Just by the numbers there will accidents involving flammable materials. No fatalities, no damage to dwellings, no damage to buildings. There is a fire. Combustible chemicals will burn. It is a so what other than for the railroad, the shipper, and whoever owns the chemicals being shipped. Catastrophe is EPA speak for a normal accident.

We’ve had a Democratic Congress and President for two years. Somehow, they are not responsible; it’s Trump’s fault.
Is regulation supposed to go one way, more, more, more? That is the socialist model. Adding regulations is like tuning up your car. We just need a little fine-tuning.
However, society is not a machine. It’s made up of people who are largely self-regulating. That applies to the free market as well.
I told a man about the success of Reagan’s de-regulation of airlines. He would have none of it. He’s the same man who puffed out his chest and proudly told me “When I was 17, I volunteered for Hitler’s Army.”
Railroads are not known to adopt new technology very quickly.
As recently as 2013, Norfolk Southern had a RR crossing on a fairly busy road with no remote monitoring or telemetry whatsoever.
Wouldn’t be one bit surprised if it were still that way, and because remote monitoring and telemetry would make them aware of problems and ignorance is bliss (and a good legal defense, apparently).
