The Trump administration has finalized a roll back of Obama-era regulations for oil trains.
The rules, which date back to 2015, required railroads carrying crude oil or other flammable liquids to outfit their trains with more responsive electronic braking systems. The rules came in response to concerns about explosions and spills from mile-long trains of crude and ethanol. In the Northwest, those trains move along the Columbia River and through cities to coastal refineries.
The U.S. Department of Transportation, which has been working on rescinding the rules since last December, said in statement this week that its analysis showed the cost of requiring railroads to equip trains with the new brakes outweighed the potential benefits.
The rail industry has resisted the new braking requirements. The American Association of Railroads, a freight rail industry group, had previously attempted to appeal the Obama administration’s decision, stating that the rules imposed unreasonably high costs to railroads and that the government had overstated the benefits of the brakes.

Early 2017....Mantle Ride(activist hedge fund) owned by Paul Hilal tries to snatch up an American railroad. After having destroyed CN and CP.
He uses a guy named Hunter Harrison, now dead, to come in and fire as many human being as possible, so that there are barely enough people to run the trains. Thr trains are made longer and heavier, leading to break downs, maintenance nightmares and fewer crews to operate them. Crew shortages lead to crossings being blocked, sometimes, for days(federal law that the railroad CANNOT be cited). Train crews, by law, are mandated to have the same type of rest periods as pilots and truck drivers.
Of course, Hilal can’t go to BNSF, it’s owned by Buffet who is much wealthier than he is, so Buffet tells him to pound sand. He goes to UP, the biggest of them all, and he’s told to pound sand. He goes to NS and again, pound sand. But Hilal finds some greedy, POSs in the leadership and BOD of CSX, that eagerly lap up the snake oil he’s selling.
What does he sell....typical Wall St business model...cut it to the bone...boost the stock price...when it hits its peak...SELL SELL SELL SELL....model was to be there for about 4 years and then bounce, leaving a wake of destruction, just like what he did in Canada.
I think, by the time they were done pairing down the roster, CSX went from around 28,000 employees to right around 20-21,000. That’s before folks started resigning and retiring.
Harrison dies of cancer, but all his henchmen are still there. For the first time, ever, you see Help Wanted billboards along the Georgia highways for CSX. Something not common for railroad jobs given the pay, benefits and amazing retirement, if you can last the 30 years. This younger generation isn’t too interested in working in the cold, rain, away from home days at a time.
As some that I know working there, the consider themselves a hedge fund asset. Nothing more. Waiting for the pink slip.
It’s gotten so bad that they’re being forced to give bonuses in cash and F150s if you can make it a year without an on-duty injury. They aren’t giving away all that much cash or buying all that many F150s.
CSX is/was so bad that its customers actually complained to Congress about all the delays, especially at the ports. Harrison’s reply to the feds...My duty is to the shareholders not to our customers or clients
If you import things, through a port, you’re a captive audience unless your product can be moved by truck. And there are many things that are required to be moved by rail.
Well....what other company decided to copy the CSX/Harrison/Hilal business model? Norfolk Southern.
As for the chemicals on those trains, some of that stuff is so bad you have to wonder why they even make it. There’s a facility in NE Tenn, outside of Johnson City, that is the size of a small city. They’re stuff has to go by rail.
