The Trump administration has finalized a roll back of Obama-era regulations for oil trains.
The rules, which date back to 2015, required railroads carrying crude oil or other flammable liquids to outfit their trains with more responsive electronic braking systems. The rules came in response to concerns about explosions and spills from mile-long trains of crude and ethanol. In the Northwest, those trains move along the Columbia River and through cities to coastal refineries.
The U.S. Department of Transportation, which has been working on rescinding the rules since last December, said in statement this week that its analysis showed the cost of requiring railroads to equip trains with the new brakes outweighed the potential benefits.
The rail industry has resisted the new braking requirements. The American Association of Railroads, a freight rail industry group, had previously attempted to appeal the Obama administration’s decision, stating that the rules imposed unreasonably high costs to railroads and that the government had overstated the benefits of the brakes.
What is the deal with FR becoming a Never Trump site?
“even with the brakes on all the cars in emergency”
Would better brakes have been a good thing here?
“If it is true that this train carried on for over 20 miles with a grinding and sparking axle then the railroad will be way more than liable for all this.”
This is actually true, though how long it takes for the axle to burn off after the bearing locks up can vary a lot. BUT, the real truth is that had there been a caboose on the end of the train with someone in it to be WATCHING the train then at the first signs of smoke and fire the train would have been stopped. So, indeed, the Railroads themselves are to blame for this because they are who got rid of the cabooses and the people in them on the Nations rail roads. They would LIKE to have only one person on the train total, an engineer to run the whole thing. This should put a stop to that crazy...
I read the day of the first derailment, that safety regulations had RECENTLY been dropped by Biden and now it’s ‘Trump’s fault’?
Cripes. This is just stupidly wierd. I was trying to figure out why the thread was started.
Well, now I know. I was holding off judgement, but...I can see from some posts that critics of this Freeper had it spot on.
Perhaps. If it was brake failure and they had gone so far as to raise the safety standards in the Obama administration.
Not all regulation is evil.
There’s no evidence that better braking would’ve prevented what happened in Ohio.
If anything the evidence points to the train derailing because one of the axles broke during emergency braking caused by the detection of an overheated axle!
Elect a RINO and all will be great again.
This is what RATs are saying to absolve themselves from their responsibility on their watch.
And nobody for 2 years reinstated these vital rules? 🙄
“even with the brakes on all the cars in emergency”
Would better brakes have been a good thing here?
Well, you can only stop something so fast. Just like your car, the weight of the car causes you to not be able to stop all that quickly. The more weight, the longer it takes to stop. So, the brakes go into emergency and the air pressure into the brake system and the brakes start rubbing on the wheels. It would be worse of the brakes locked up the wheels because then it would slide or skid just like a car does.
“NeverTrumpers, here, tend to post DS/Uniparty leaning posts.
Unreal, to see on this conservative forum, isn’t it?”
NeverTrump, “elections are honest,” and pro-Ukraine. I can get that stuff anywhere. So I mostly stay away.
The train was on fire for miles before derailment. This is an asinine correlation, the stupid burns, with the BS artist.
Perhaps. If it was brake failure and they had gone so far as to raise the safety standards in the Obama administration.
Not all regulation is evil.
It had nothing to do with “brake failure”.
Lots of ifs in there. What is the cause for the derailment?
All I know is that in this day and age there is no excuse fro them not knowing they have sparks flying as an axle is grinding down to it snapping point. There are wireless cameras, Temp sensors, audio sensors monitored by computer, and the like that should be part of the system. Especially when they are carrying such toxic chemicals as these. Many Many people will die an early death from this.
The regulation was only in effect for 3 years and had never existed for 100 years before that.
But go on and blame Trump because the Democrats in charge of the crash decided to burn the cars full of toxic gas.
Where’s your regulations for THAT?!
Seems like a legitimate topic for discussion. It IS a real news story from 2018. Are you that afraid to diving into the truth as to whether there is a linkage or not? Or are we supposed to stay a pro-Trump echo chamber that runs away from the truth?
Quite frankly, I don’t know if there is a connection or not. It would be interesting to find out. But i’ve always thought that one distinguishing characteristic of Conservatives is that we are driven by truth and not ideology.
Railroad companies have all the financial motivation in the world to be safe. The derailment in Palestine, OH is costing Norfolk Southern each day the tracks are not open. Government goes overboard on regulations, and since only morons work for government they don’t know what to regulate when regulation is needed.
trump’s “operation warped speech” against desantis for his doing the right thing for us floridians started it...
you’re worshipping the man that claims the experimental shots are “safe and effective”...
uuuummm, oil wasn’t the problem...
