At the very minimum, it’s an intrusion into our airspace, and not something a non-adversarial nation would do.
Having trouble understanding why it’s being tracked and not shot sown. Hard to see how a balloon show down could be a risk to civilians, except if it was carrying a payload.
Despite the efforts of the neoCommunists in DC, the USA is still the mightiest military in the world with summary Air Power in all frontiers.
A balloon poses no threat, has been fully inspected and is monitored on all levels for “signals”.
If needed, it can be terminated at the push of a button.
We know what it is, what it is intended for and where it is going.

Jennifer something or other on FOX At the Pentagon reported that the Pentagon indicated they are doing something to prevent it from collecting information.
Counter electronic warfare can damage their collection equipment or prevent it from transmitting back to China or to a satillite in earth orbit. (I think this is what they are doing here, sending it back through their satellites. ) Hopefully they are beaming high energy RF at both of them and overloading their electronics. (Although they probably are using protected equiptment.)
I think we should NOT xhoot it down. Our newly established space force should go up with a manuverable high altitude military dirigible (i assume we have one) to snag the mast on their antenna array, tether it and drag it down in a controlled way for disassmbly and examination. (Then we can start working on removing all theCCP TickTok info collection devices on our phones!) Hopefully it does not contain an EMP or Dirty nulear wepond.
(Bonus round! After we remove everything of interest, we stencil a big "Winnie the Xi" and "Joey Pidgette" on the side and float the empty ballon back to China along with a bill fining them 30 Trillion dollars for violation of our airspace and spying on us.)

Interesting that path goes right over a number of locations - some less well known then others.
Easily identified is near the Norfolk, VA area where the Atlantic fleet is of course located.
Less well known is the Naval Weapons Support Center in Crane, Indiana (near where I grew up).

There is a perspective out there that the baloon visit is China’s wordless answer to the US provocations demonstrated by Pelosi poking the bear, and the subsequent US MIL build up around Taiwan. Few nations want to be seen as impotent following an undiplomatic insult, followed up by MIL presence.
