A “rare” mosaic depicting scenes of the Trojan War has been uncovered in Syria, archeologists said Wednesday.
The mosaic, believed to be 1,300-square-feet, is considered the most important archaeological discovery in Syria since the country’s conflict began 11 years ago, partially due to how intact and detailed it is.
The stunning Roman-era artwork is said to have been constructed 1,600 years ago in what may have been the floor of an ancient bathhouse, but further excavation and research needs to be conducted. Archeologists have only unearthed 65 feet of the mosaic but believe there is much more to find.

Thank god our CIA/USAID created ISIS that got out of control and “moderate” sunni headchoppers didn’t find it first.

NY Post seems to be dubious that this mosaic is rare based on repeated use of quotations around it.
Unless China was cranking these things out and shipping them worldwide for sale at Roman Walmart I'd say a one-of-a kind 1,600 year old mosaic is rare.

I wonder if, 2000 years from now, there will be articles about the discovery of a very rare “Dogs Playing Poker” painting?

I have been told that Mexicans are real good at tile work. But I don’t know if they are good with mosaic tile.
BTW - don’t read this is a racist post. It is a wonderful thing to excel at one’s craft. Whoever did that floor should be proud (in the classical era way).

a one-of-a kind 1,600 year old mosaic is rare. What makes this mosaic really rare is that the seated male figure is Mr. Worf.

He would go back in time to fight in the Trojan war. Klingons like combat.

Seeing as how every mosaic was a custom hand-made job, aren’t they all, by definition, rare?

He would go back in time to fight in the Trojan war. Klingons like combat. True, but Worf was also the original Saint Nicholas.

Clicking through to the article, one can see how amazingly intact the terrerae (the small pieces of colored tile) of this mosaic are, making the identification of images and words and themes easier than in most such excavations.
To: Seeing More Clearly Now
My Typo: the word for the small pieces of tile is “TESSERAE.”
