My children were born in New York but now live in Texas. I sometimes wish we had never moved.

My children were born in New York City. As toddlers, they played in the American Museum of Natural History, joined baby-music classes on the Upper East Side, gnawed on street pretzels, and threw leaves in the air in Central Park.

I had originally expected to be a Manhattan mom, but over the years I've come to accept they are now southern kids living in Houston, Texas.

They wear shorts year-round, wear sunshine on their skin, crave Whataburger, have never made a snowman, and get pumped for Go Texan Day, dressed in boots, vests, and hats — it's like Halloween twice a year in my eyes.

It wasn't my idea to move from a comfortable life in Manhattan to Houston, my ex's home city. I thought it was supposed to be temporary, but I was wrong.

Texas showed me BBQ festivals, square dancing, bluebonnets, and the flaws of my marriage. Now with a Texas divorce decree and the kids settled in school with friends and activities, it seems like I'm stuck here for good, or at least until my kids grow up.

-snip

There are also experiences that remind me I'm in Texas, like a dead snake's skin being tangled in my daughter's scooter wheels, a "beware of alligators" sign at a playground, armadillo sightings, a lack of road shoulders, and guns-and-ammo signs next to a pet store.

I worry about my kids' safety wherever they go while living in a state with historically loose gun laws. I worry about what women's health will be like for my daughter's generation. I debate on how young of an age I will tell her about contraceptives because of the war on women's access to care and treatment in this state.

I lived in NYC briefly back in 1997 when it was safer and cleaner than it is now.

It still sucked. NYC was THE worst place I have ever lived - and I’ve lived in 8 states and 4 foreign countries. I’ve lived in over 20 different cities. I’ve lived in a town with 10,000 people. NYC was hands down the worst place I’ve ever lived.

and everybody says its worse now.

Not Texas. Houston. Where you need to carry when you go get gas.

True ... Houston: one of several Texas cities that have been polluted by the Trash moving in from the North and bringing their voting habits with them ...

Go back to your filthy, urine, feces (and GOK what else) infested streets.

I've always lived near NYC, but only recently returned to Manhattan for medical treatments. These days I always have a driver and the drivers seldom take the same routes.

I've been amazed at how clean the City looks; even the West Side. I also see lots of carefree kids riding scooters &c.

NYC is not the cesspool that I imagine San Francisco to be.

I’m originally from NY. I’d NEVER go back to try to live.

Too much damned gun violence.

Neither Texas nor Houston is the south.

Texas is Texas.

And Houston/Harris County are not the south.

The only thing I had a hard time with whenever I visited the DFW area (Plano/Richardson) was 8ft spite fences in every backyard.   Any view in any yard is only your own backyard. /yuck

“DEADLY 2022: Houston leads Chicago, NYC, and LA in homicides so far this year

“If it keeps up this pace, we’re going to be well over 500 murders this year,” said Houston Police Officers’ Union president Douglas Griffith. “I have family here. I grew up here. It’s one of those things, I’m fearful for my family, just to go out of the house.”

Griffith believes the rise in violence across Houston is mainly the result of two issues. He says HPD is very understaffed and desperately needs to hire additional officers.

In addition, Griffith believes court judges need to stop letting violent criminals out of jail on bond.”

Crime is extremely local. I’d guess parts of Houston - particularly the melanin-rich parts - truly ARE dangerous. But if she was in a trailer park in a small town of Texas, she’d be pretty safe.

In Arizona, the corridor running along I19 to I10 then on north to Phoenix and turning west to LA is dangerous. Lots of crime due to lots of drug running. If you are 3 miles or more away, your safety goes WAY up. Move into a Trump-loving small town, and regardless of color, you’ll be very safe!

Approach any random male neighbor and actually introduce yourself. Ask him to teach your children gun safety.

Next, teach your daughter to keep her pants on and not be a slut.

There, I just solved all of your problems.

“Griffith believes the rise in violence across Houston is mainly the result of two issues. He says HPD is very understaffed and desperately needs to hire additional officers.”

HPD is corrupt and recruits those “released” from sheriff’s department.

Harris County Sheriff’s not much better. Harris County Constables had the right mindset at least in NW County.

She should definitely leave...she sounds like a train wreck, and there are too many of them in Austin for TX already.
