My children were born in New York but now live in Texas. I sometimes wish we had never moved.

My children were born in New York City. As toddlers, they played in the American Museum of Natural History, joined baby-music classes on the Upper East Side, gnawed on street pretzels, and threw leaves in the air in Central Park.

I had originally expected to be a Manhattan mom, but over the years I've come to accept they are now southern kids living in Houston, Texas.

They wear shorts year-round, wear sunshine on their skin, crave Whataburger, have never made a snowman, and get pumped for Go Texan Day, dressed in boots, vests, and hats — it's like Halloween twice a year in my eyes.

It wasn't my idea to move from a comfortable life in Manhattan to Houston, my ex's home city. I thought it was supposed to be temporary, but I was wrong.

Texas showed me BBQ festivals, square dancing, bluebonnets, and the flaws of my marriage. Now with a Texas divorce decree and the kids settled in school with friends and activities, it seems like I'm stuck here for good, or at least until my kids grow up.

-snip

There are also experiences that remind me I'm in Texas, like a dead snake's skin being tangled in my daughter's scooter wheels, a "beware of alligators" sign at a playground, armadillo sightings, a lack of road shoulders, and guns-and-ammo signs next to a pet store.

I worry about my kids' safety wherever they go while living in a state with historically loose gun laws. I worry about what women's health will be like for my daughter's generation. I debate on how young of an age I will tell her about contraceptives because of the war on women's access to care and treatment in this state.

Get the h*ll out of Texas, then, Karen Isobella!

Go back to your filthy, urine, feces (and GOK what else) infested streets...that your sweet lil ones HAVE to walk on....go back to your pummeling and freak shows by the homeless, living on same streets....go back to trudging through the dog (and homeless) feces covered snow and the bags of trash lining your curbs....that move...from the rats digging through.

Don’t let the TX door hit ya, on your stinkin’ way out.

I'm suspecting that a LOT of your neighbors wish the same.

Over 30 years ago I could have pursued a six figure salary
computer job on Wall Street. But I didn't want to live in,
nor commute to New York city - Manhattan no less.
So I turned the job down.

Once in a while I remember that episode - but still don't
regret my decision. Maybe I was/am a fool - but I don't care.

“Insane person prefers New York over Texas.”

Not Texas. Houston. Where you need to carry when you go get gas.

I have visited and hated every moment. You can’t even really drive there, mostly just taxis on the road, and nearly every normal car you see if all dinged up and damaged from trying to drive in that nut house.

Construction everywhere, homeless everywhere, dirty, and nasty everywhere.

I didn’t see even ONE nice thing the whole time there. I just wanted to get the hell out of there safely.

I suspect anything west of New York City and south of Washington D.C. is simply too too provincial for some.

I would strongly suggest they spend more time enjoying the cultural ‘advantages’ of their cosmopolitan world and not even visit such icky places.
I can promise them, I will never even think of going anywhere near their precious Northeast again. Once was enough 40-50 years ago

Houston? Ugh. She may have a point.

I have known ZERO adult NYC transplants in DFW that say “I want to live in NYC again!” Zero. They have so much more $$$ power here and big homes to live in. They may visit NYC occasionally, but live there again no way.

Kinda’ like the freed slaves in the book of Exodus longing for the leeks and cucumber back in Egypt.
Her kids are young. Lots of laws about guns in new York..too bad nobody follows ‘em. Wait till her young man gets jumped by the young thug’s of New York in the subways on his way to crowded Coney Island. Or her daughter needs to practice birth control or abortion cuz she was raped by the men in the homeless encampment near the Guggenheim.
Homesick little girl sending out her bleats. Ptui.
Yup, keep voting for the corrupt prison wardens of New York. It’s a wonderful town.

Good gosh. I was thinking the same thing. Just leave and go back to New York. Go.

Go.

Go.

Of course, she will probably move to Austin, and swell the bloated numbers of blood-sucking Leftist ticks who live there.
