It's like tossing raw eggs, or not. :)

Wife and I used to conclude our day-time dates with a round of stone-skipping at the beach. Still do, occasionally.

We've also spent some time skipping stones into the Sea of Galilee in Israel - that was pretty cool.

Kids today have no idea how to make their own fun.

Imagine setting a world record with one of your best stones only to realize that you just threw it away.......

Sort of inherent in the activity. I suppose some genius could come up with a way of retrieving a favourite stone but it would be a niche market for sure.

Expensive pastime. Rocks are at a premium these days.

Oh the dilemma! Should I throw or should I go!

I was fortunate enough to see my dad and a handful of his friends doing this on many an occasion - he patiently tried to teach me but I only got the magic to happen maybe 4-5 times out of 1000s. :(

After Kurt graduated from Behrend, he earned money delivering flowers for his mom and laying bitumen roofs. But he couldn’t face regular work, and eventually he registered for unemployment. Doctors refused to prescribe talk therapy, and for the general sense of depression that would later be refined to diagnoses of schizoaffective disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, he was given only Zoloft, an antidepressant, which he sometimes supplemented with recreational psychoactive drugs. During one week in 1994, he couldn’t get his prescription filled and got into a store argument that involved the police.
...
Skipping was “safe from development and capitalism, and in control,” he told me, at odds with a society that seemed “hell-bent on detaching itself from the natural world.”

Maybe it was a slow news day.

It reads like a life (or lives of all named in the story) wasted by drugs and Leftist mind-screw.

My best is 15.

After a while it becomes habit forming. Every time I pass a body of water I automatically start looking for a rock. My wife helps me find them too, even though she doesn’t throw them. True love. :)

My best is 15.

I just watched a YouTube video of this guy. He set the world record, 88 skips.

Local river rocks are shale fragments, flattish but angular. The corners dig into the water; six jumps is rare.

I try to teach the next generation, but angular rocks are not encouraging.

Who keeps score and how?

Chuck Norris would, win easily, skipping a stone from the Atlantic to the Pacific with no problem.

He’s so tough he only needs one chess piece when playing chess too

There are competitions. Throws are video-recorded and judges count the skips. It looks like it's tough on the rotator cuff.
