Gay men are more than twice as likely to develop inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) than heterosexual men when both populations engage in high-risk sexual activity.
"To our knowledge, this is the first large population-based study that demonstrates a higher prevalence of IBD in men who engage in high-risk same-sex sexual activity," said Emad Mansoor. "Our study is expected to open a new field of research into gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions."
"Studying the cause of IBD in this underrepresented patient population in comparison to other patient groups," said Fabio Cominelli, "will allow us to further investigate the cause of disease development in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis patients and develop personalized precision medicine and treatment strategies, while also reducing stigma."
The study's impact is significant, as more than 7.1% of the United States population identifies as LGBTQIA+, an increase from 5.6% in 2020, according to Gallup.
The team evaluated self-reported data from patients treated at 58 health care organizations in the U.S. between 2002 and 2022.
The data showed that in patients with a diagnosis of high-risk same-sex sexual activity, 0.8% were diagnosed with Crohn's disease and 1.26% with ulcerative colitis. These findings were compared to men who engage in high-risk heterosexual activity, of which, 0.49% had Crohn's disease and 0.52% had ulcerative colitis.
High-risk sexual activity as defined in this study includes sexual contact without barrier protection as well as having multiple sexual partners.
The team also further analyzed the data in relation to Crohn's disease and found men who engaged in high-risk same-sex sexual activity were more likely to have peri-anal disease including peri-anal abscess, rectal abscess and stricturing disease of the colon or small intestine. Among those with severe manifestations of ulcerative colitis, men who engaged in high-risk same-sex sexual activity were more likely to undergo partial colectomy.

âThatâs a hard one!â
Yes, that appears to be the problem.
Shouldn’t the study have included women who get screwed in the rear? Wonder if they’re less likely to have a problem.
I suspect that even within the confines of a monogamous relationship, that act has little to offer women's pleasure or health. I'm only sorry it took this many replies until someone remembered that men often pressure women into this too.
Literary ping!
Then why are we pushing our children into this lifestyle?
Rumor has it that AIDS was first transported to the West Coast Hollywood area in the rear end of an old Hudson.
No, it's a cats-ass-trophe.
No s__t!
Ya donât say!?
I would like to know if gay men have a higher incidence rate of childhood health issues from asthma to Crohnâs and beyond. Just based on men Iâve known, I have long suspected thereâs a different intrinsic (not necessarily genetic) pre-maturity health pattern compared to their heterosexual counterparts.
As to the early comments on the threat, Iâll never understand the ignorant obsession some have with what groups they donât like do in the bedroom. Studies show oral sex experience among heterosexuals is over 80% and anal sex experience at least one third of heterosexuals. CDC source (Which will get attacked because cdc *eyeroll* )
Next up, a study to determine if jumping into a river makes you “wetter.”
Iâm wondering if they asked men who already had Crohnâs or Colitis if they were gay. I have UC, dxâd in 1994, and I can safely say that I have never been, and never WILL be gay.
And anyway, so what if they are. Treat them, and move on.
And I donât remember EVER being asked that question, by anyone.
RidiculousâŚ
“Twice” the “gay” cases in a matter medical matter than affects less than 1% of either demographic, “gay” or heterosexual. Once you absorb that fact it tells you nearly 99% of either demographic do not develop the problem. The study is either too small or lacks other necessary variables to identify the main causes.
Well the telltale sign in the beginning is a hard pounding sensation in the arse.
Porn.
My sons are Marines. They went into the Corp together at 17 and 18 (they are 15 month apart). They are fine Christian men and both are now married. My sons honored and respected women as they should be. I had to sit them both down and talk to them before they left for basic training and explain to them that most of their counterparts would be totally desensitized to pornography and would probably expect them to be as well. My sons were known by their recruiters, fellow recruits and later their Drill Sergeant’s and fellow Marines to never have been sexually active. I expressed to them they needed to be roll models and exceptional Marines as a witness. They did just that and made many friends and several that became Christians in large part to my sons witness to them.
When they returned home from Basic Training and School of Infantry they thanked me for preparing them to confront the scourge of porn.
That’s really excellent that you spoke with them directly and openly about it. Clearly it paid off!
Didn’t it used to be called, Gay Bowel Disease?
