Brittney Griner Is 'Stressed' in Russian Prison as She Awaits the Start of Her Appeal Hearings
People via Yahoo ^ | 9/13/22 | Julie Mazziotta

More than a month has passed since Brittney Griner was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison, and the WNBA star is "stressed" as she waits for news on her appeal process or a possible prisoner exchange, her lawyer tells PEOPLE.

With no new updates on her next possible steps, "Brittney is stressed and very much concerned with the future," her lawyer Maria Blagovolina, a partner at Rybalkin Gortsunyan Dyakin and Partners, says.

Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison on Aug. 4 on charges of smuggling drugs into the country, just below the maximum sentence of 10 years. After the trial, Blagovolina had said the sentence was "absolutely unreasonable," and that she and Griner's legal team will file an appeal as soon as possible.

That happened on Aug. 15, and nearly a month later, they're still waiting to learn what day the hearings will start, Blagovolina says.

Blagovolina had previously told PEOPLE that they don't know if the appeal will be successful - and historically, appeals have not done much to change Russian prison sentences - but said that they have to try.

"We need to use every legal opportunity that we have, and appeal is one of these opportunities," she said.

Once the appeal does begin, the process will also take several months, another of Griner's lawyers, Alexander Boykov, from the Moscow Legal Center, told PEOPLE. "It's not very fast."

Is Brittney Griner Receiving Her WNBA Salary While in Russian Jail?

The simple answer is that her bank account should be in decent shape. The WNBA announced in May that Griner would be paid her full salary while she remains in Russia, and the money would not count against the salary cap for the Phoenix Mercury.

Maybe 9 years in a Russian prison, he’ll make it clear that he’s a man to some of those lonely Russian prisoners.

Brittanys “wife” is probably spending any joint account cash on unsupervised shopping sprees.

I'm reminded of that movie about Turkish prisons called "Midnight Express". A guy got busted for smuggling drugs in Turkey.

If I remember right the prisoner dressed up as a woman to escape.

Griner has that part nailed already so there's some hope. Oh wait. I think the Russians are already on to that ruse.

Let's get one thing straight, she got caught with an illegal substance in a tough country that doesn't let your skin color determine your guilt or innocence,

I have 2 questions and if answered honestly by britney, it could make me more simpathetic towards her.

1. How long before boarding the plane to Russia did you use your vape pipe?

2. What were you planning to do with the vape pipe and THC oil once you got to Russia?

It could be worse, she could be dead if she'd been caught in the Philippines!

The part about killing the guard was added by director Oliver Stone from an earlier incident in a Turkish prison. Billy did not do that.

Nine years is a long time, nine years in a Russian prison is a very long time, but as someone once said “this too shall pass.”

The question is will this break her or will it make her stronger?

Unfortunately I don’t think her life to this point has really prepared her for what she now faces and I fear she will be broken while in prison assuming she serves the full term.

If the Russians let her out early she will become a celebrity and continue on with her life not worrying about the consequences of her words or action.

Perhaps Brittney Griner can get an early release for Russian Prison if she is willing to sign up with the mercenary groups now taking enlistments to go fight against Ukrainian militia in the east of Ukraine and Crimea.

But one of the requirements is that NO drugs and NO alcohol use by the recruits are allowed. Also, no surrender when confronted by force, always carrying two grenades. One to heave in a last desperate attempt to take out the enemy, and the other to lie down upon and pull the pin. Attempts to desert will be subject to immediate execution.

Well, on the bright side she won’t be subjected to our National Anthem, so she’s got that going for her.

LOL, great point.

But if I were Russia I would after a few months offer her a buy out, say $5 Million. Then put her across a border (e.g. Ukraine) once the money is received. Not cost effective for Russia to keep her in prison for the 9 years, and could have more negative press if she were to commit suicide.

My prediction. At some e pointing her life, she will say that life in racist America is as bad as or worse than a Russian prison. It’s the way leftists behave.

I wonder how much the Russian prison warden would charge us for playing the American national anthem over the prison PA system for at least once a day during the entire length of Brittney’s stay.
